Is there a log that would indicate if avahi-daemon is in fact getting restarted regularly?

How to: Linux share with credentials, not guest access [solved]
I want to access my files on another computer on the LAN, but not give access to everyone. I share my folder on my main computer. Browsing the network with Caja, I access the share on another computer and get asked for username and password. It doesn't take, but just comes back asking again. The onl...

Re: Can't get to Linux after power issues
Thank you for all the responses!
I was able to add a ubuntu boot option and that seems to have fixed it.
Do I care that the BIOS screen doesn't show the Legacy boot options like my other laptop?
Do I need that 'UEFI: Samsung SSD' boot option that my other computer has? If so, where is it?

Can't get to Linux after power issues
I had a bad power port that was repaired by a technician. Now the laptop only boots to Windows; no grub. If I go into the BIOS there is no ubuntu option. If I boot live and run gparted, the dual boot partition structure looks to still be there. I read some stuff about grub-install but it sounds like...

Re: New kernel bad for webcam cpu usage
Thanks for the tip. Kernel 4.15 did not have the problem. In the meantime, 5.4.0-54 came out and it is also fine. Is there a way pick a default kernel that is not the latest? The system will boot to the latest installed kernel unless I go through grub. Apparently if I want to use 4.15 I have to make...

New kernel bad for webcam cpu usage [solved]
The latest kernel 5.4.0.53 causes my Logitech 920x webcam to use a lot of cpu (Zoom, Cheese). I reverted to 5.4.0.52 and cpu went back down.

Thought for a second it might be execute permission on .bashrc but I added it and still no joy.

shopt -s nocaseglob

Re: Angetube Sreaming Webcam Audio Volume
I figured it out. It was a combination of cranking up the mic volume in pavucontrol and turning up the SPEAKER volume on the TV. (I'm turning the TV room into a Zoom room so the TV, over HDMI, is the monitor and the soundbar is the speaker. So, yeah.) Is there an easy way to make the pavucontrol set...

Angetube Sreaming Webcam Audio Volume [solved]
I am trying to use a new Angetube Streaming Webcam (with light ring) on an old Lenovo ThinkCentre M57/6072 running LM 19.3. The main problem is low audio volume even if the mic is cranked all the way up in Control Center>Sound. (When I record in Cheese or Zoom I can barely here myself.) Another symp...

nocaseglob not working [solved]
I set filename completion to be case insensitive (so I can start typing a filename and hit tab to complete) in .bashrc: shopt -s nocaseglob This has worked for years including two computer that were upgraded to LM 19.3; still does. I recently did a fresh install of 19.3 on another computer and it do...

Re: Web Content, CPU, Cursor
As I move the cursor smoothly toward a button, it pauses then catches up, causing me to over-shoot the button. It's as though processing web content is prioritized above cursor movement.

Web Content, CPU, Cursor
I often get high-ish CPU while browsing with Firefox that causes the cursor to jump. I think it's probably javascript at sites like facebook (I read it for the articles) where blocking javascript would break the site. CPU is high but not maxed. I would have thought the cursor would have priority. Th...

Re: mDNS fails regularly; requires avahi-daemon restart
Well, maybe it helped but mDNS failure is still happening. I don't know what "multiuser runlevels" are but I guess I don't have enough of them.
Sometimes it takes more than one avahi-daemon restart to restore functionality.

mDNS fails regularly; requires avahi-daemon restart
I still have this problem: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=157&t=313110&p=1787915#p1787915 Right after restarting all the computers on my LAN, local name resolution works. After a day or so, it breaks on one machine or another; can't ping *.local and backups fail. Functionality ...
