Re: Upgrade glitch 19.3 to 20: encrypted swap doesn't exist

Just to confirm, if you run the command swapon --show it returns nothing? The "encrypted swap: known issue" text I can't find in mintupgrade. Is that the exact message you got? Can you run the check again and copy all output from the terminal and share it here --- you can select all text a...

Re: Brainteaser for those who like to have their brains bent

It's a false statement. Let's assume for a minute this statement is true, truth value being 1. "This statement is false" can then be simplified to 1 == 0. The question whether it's a false or true statement can then be calculated. In bash test 1 -eq 0 && echo true || echo false ans...

Re: A '.desktop' architecture question

To be clear, neither the Linux Mint installer nor Software Manager put .desktop files in your home directory. They only install .desktop files in /usr/share/applications, if a package for a program includes a .desktop file. And mind the dates; most of these files were created in 2019. Bit of info th...

Re: Using newest Python versions (Or: "When One plays with a Python, One usually gets bit...lol.")

It's fine to install multiple Python versions on Linux Mint. What is not fine is replacing your system's default Python version (that is, leave the file /usr/bin/python3 untouched) or uninstalling it. If you're a Python programmer I'm not telling you anything new that newer versions of Python can ha...

Re: Latest version of KDE

If you're happy to experiment and reinstall if this blows up :!: you could try removing the backports repository and instead add the KDE Neon repository. Put these lines in your /etc/apt/sources.list file, or in the file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/neon.list: deb http://archive.neon.kde.org/user focal m...

Re: sort error

It does sort correctly, for your locale. I already linked you to sort's "gotchas" but to spell it out: A very common issue encountered is with the default ordering of the sort utility. Usually what is required is a simple byte comparison, though by default the collation order of the curren...

Re: [SOLVED] Good linux based YAML & Python IDE?

The topic was about a Notepad++ like editor with YAML and Python syntax highlighting, and basic editor functionality. Xed does all that, comes readily installed on Linux Mint and isn't a resource hog like Electron apps. If you have more complex needs there are many editors and IDEs to choose from. I...

Re: Shortcut to command line launch

Ah, I thought the command would do a one-off thing. I don't know it. Then change the file to this and it will run both commands, without waiting on the first program to exit: #!/bin/bash butt -c ~/.buttrc_mp3 &>/dev/null & butt -c ~/.buttrc_aac &>/dev/null & That's a bit more technic...

Re: Regarding the File preview function

Ah, I didn't quite get that. Right now Nemo previews a single file at a time. Pressing space previews the file but in preview you can't switch to another file. Press space again to close preview then use cursor keys to move to another file and press space to preview that file.

Re: Shortcut to command line launch

The Linux alternative to a bat file is a shell script. Open the text editor (Xed) from your menu and put this in a new file: #!/bin/bash butt -c ~/.buttrc_mp3 butt -c ~/.buttrc_aac That first line is called the hashbang line and tells the Linux kernel which interpreter to use to execute this script....

Re: Regarding the File preview function

Previews are built into Nemo. Highlight a file you want to preview (by left-clicking it or using cursor keys to move the highlight to that file) and press space key shows the preview.

Re: Nemo -- Bogus Names?!?!?!

The topic has run its course. Locked. In summary; desktop entry files are text files describing information about an application such as the name, icon, and description. These files are used for application launchers and for creating menus of applications that can be launched. File managers can show...

Re: Can't install JDownloader

JDownloader is distributed as a flatpak. That is a special type of package format which includes, in a security isolated way, all the libraries that it needs to run. In this case the entire Java runtime. That can make flatpaks large and slow to download. Most flatpaks depend on a so-called runtime t...

As the warnings say, you have the same repository configured in the file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list and in the file: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/opera-stable.list I would guess the first is what you added yourself and the latter what, perhaps?, Opera added after you first ran ...

This is how Thunar — Xfce's file manager — version on Linux Mint 20.2 treats the special type of files you created at step 1. Those are desktop entry files; text files describing information about an application such as the name, icon, and description. These files are used for application launchers ...

The FAQ says this about it: https://www.simplify3d.com/support/faq/#quest-6346. That's also the answer you see repeated on the forums. It says you should run the program as root so that it can access the serial port the printer is on. Before doing that I'd suggest to try adding yourself to the dialo...

Linux Mint base Ubuntu 21.04 … That doesn't exist. Linux Mint 20.x are based on Ubuntu 20 .04 LTS.
