Re: Desktop Manager designed for touchscreens
Funny how things that go around come around. I switched to Mint back when Canonical went with Unity - hated it, head exploding awful. Have been a Mint man since and admit haven't even given Ubuntu a second chance after years. I knew Ubuntu had more touchscreen focus but hoping Mint gets there too no...

Re: Viruses on Linux Mint
Looks like for repositories it has CD Rom, Google, and Plex, but thats it. So keep in mind when you have 'Additional Repositories' entries you are allowing them to install anything they want on your system when updating an app pointed to that repository. It's up to you which sources you trust. Not ...

Re: Desktop Manager designed for touchscreens
Thanks, haven't used KDE for egads, will check into it. Am surprised how often I use the touchscreen as at first I didn't think I'd use it. Typically when laptop is in my lap or on belly and while web browsing. Even with the high resolution/small buttons it's very usable. And it's great for scrollin...

Re: Viruses on Linux Mint
I see. Thank you for the tip. Firefox is auto-updated by the update manager and so is chrome right? Firefox yes. If you use Chromium installed from the repositories it will auto update. If you use Chrome installed by Google download, it should install the repository entry to auto update. In Update ...

Re: Viruses on Linux Mint
Might do a search. You'll find you don't need to use any Linux virus apps, they probably just makes things worse. Linux is probably more susceptible to hacking into existing system/core apps than viruses and you can reduce chances of hacking to nearest zero by keeping Mint up to date via the Update ...

Re: [TIP] Using spare drives for backups, etc. Using USB drive cables.
You have to be very careful with the SATA/PATA - USB2 converter, the power supply is horribly cheap (5-12V). No protection what so ever. I had two of those and one went up in smoke, the other broke quickly. Personally I would not recommend powering any hard drive with that. Hmm, I've used that powe...

Desktop Manager designed for touchscreens
I picked up a Yoga 700 at Costco on sale and it runs Mint 18 well. Currently have Mate installed and the touchscreen works surprisingly well but of course is primarily designed for a mouse. It's an 11" with 1080 resolution so very small icons to touch. It's better if I change the resolution to ...

Re: Androi Tablet not recognized by my machine.
On you tablet, swipe down from top and check the USB charging method. If it's 'charging only' it doesn't connect in data mode. Need to select file transfer mode or something like that. It used to be that I could just hook my Android phone up to the computer and I would have access to the files on i...

Chrome 55 no longer getting near Gigabit speeds
Does anyone have a Gigabit connection? I have Google Fiber and Chrome used to get 940M+ on Mint 18/Mate but now 'only' does about 500M on the download and 900+ upload. It's the new 'efficient' Chrome 55 release. Firefox has no issues - 940M up/down.

[TIP] Using spare drives for backups, etc. Using USB drive cables.
I have some older drives laying around from laptop to 3.5" desktop drives and temporarily attach via USB to my laptops to use for media storage, backups, etc. I'll especially use them to do entire Disk image backups of all my Linux/Windows boot disks using the Mint "Disks" app and Cre...

Re: About to make the leap from Win7 to Mint18
One method is to backup your 17.3 disk image with a LM USB install stick (assuming you have a disk with enough space), using the Disks app and doing a Create Disk Image from upper right menu. There are many other ways to do this as some will likely point out. And then once backed up there is a way t...

Re: Microsoft tells devs: Whatever you're doing in Linux, Windows 10 will soon do it too
I'll bite. The reason I don't use Windows anymore (as primary) is because of Win bloat (can install Linux on old/low spec systems), easier to get malware (relative to Linux) and questionable Win privacy issues even if manually turning all off (MS tracking your usage now). Doing Linux functions or ru...

Re: Will Mint work on old computer?
The default drivers tend to cover Intel motherboards well so you should be OK. Though that came out in 2008, so pretty old. Worth a shot. Mint Mate and Xcfe run well if at least 2GB RAM, Xcfe is more limiting by default but very tight. Cinnamon can be sluggish on older computers. I've converted many...

Re: Should I to get rid of Win 10
Might want to make sure you have the Windows Product Key before wiping for a latter install whether as a VM or physical disk. A lot of newer computers/laptops don't provide a printed key. As mentioned before, you can get the key within Windows before wiping it... http://www.digitalcitizen.life/how-r...

Re: Hi from Missouri
Am also from Missouri (now KC, originally from STL - Google Fiber in KC is wonderful). Have been using Linux off/on since early 90s, installing from floppy disks that grew every year and now use Linux (Mint) as my primary for all computers. Was a Unix admin back in the 80s, AT&T SysV systems (la...

Re: Should I to get rid of Win 10
Hi xneo, Yes I had thought along those lines of making a backup copy, but nervous about my degree of knowledge on how to do it successfully. The brain is not so active these days, and whoops! there goes a new computer. Silver Surfer You can boot from a Mint USB stick, use the Linux "Disks"...

Re: Should I to get rid of Win 10
If able to swap original drive w/out breaking warranty is something to consider. Or backing up original Win drive as a disk image then restoring if really needing to would take care of warranty concerns.

[HOWTO] Convert Windows physical boot disk to Virtualbox and maintain activation
Don't do this if you plan to still boot from the Windows physical disk after virtualized. Don't do this on a PC planned for Win gaming. This method is using Mint Linux but can be done many different ways with various OSs that have disk imaging. Use info at your own risk... 1) Convert physical disk t...
