Tried to convert friends to Mint (Bluetooth problems)
I've converted several to Mint and they like it (mostly just use for web browsing, media and simple office). But one couple uses a bluetooth speaker regularly for music and the bluetooth wouldn't stay connected after reboot and/or would need to go into Sound settings and point to BT audio as default...

Tried Pulse Audio but when launching it hangs with screen, "Establishing connection with PulseAudio, Please wait". Any other suggestions for stock sound prefs?

Sound preferences panel doesn't launch
I'm not able to open the Sound Preferences from the lower right icon (right clicking) or from Menu-Preferences-Sound. If I reboot, I might be able to open the sound preferences from the Control Center only but if opening again from menu or right clicking on lower right icon, it won't launch and then...

Sound preferences not launching MATE 18.1
I have a fresh Mint 18.1 Mate install on Yoga700. Works great but the Sound preferences won't launch. The icon appars on panel, no launch. If I launch from Sound app a window appears for a split second and disappears. The app is "mate-volume-control" - I was going remove/reinstall from pac...

Re: Finally jumped completely off the Windows ship
Yeah I had almost all my computers primary Linux for years with one holdout on Windows as primary. When Win10 privacy issues appeared I finally got rid of Windows altogether as primary and just use under Virtualbox as needed. To update BIOS I have Win10 evaluation installed on a USB stick and use as...

Re: I never see anyone talking about building Mint desktops!
I used to build my own desktops but not a gamer anymore, outside light mobile gaming. Have been pure laptop user for many years. All of them on Linux as primary boot and Windows as a VM or secondary boot, which I rarely need.

Re: Restricting access to certain shared folders
Edit /etc/samba/smb.conf
Add line to each share...
valid users = username1, username2
Change usernames to accounts you allow access. Would be nice if this could be done via GUI.

Have used them all, keep going back to MATE. Comprehensive w/out overkill. Will use Peppermint for very very old computers otherwise.

Re: Do I need a SWAP partition ? [SOLVED]
I'll typically install Linux with swap, try swapoff -a, stress it by opening many typical apps I use at once and then if OK just comment out the swap in /etc/fstab. Is still there if you need it and just uncomment in fstab. And you need it if at all using hibernation, though not a good thing to use ...

Re: Do you use LibreOffice?
Works fine for me personally but for work I get MS Office docs that I have to edit and send back to others, which may lose some formatting depending how complicated the document (like Word with embedded Visio). Have to otherwise use MS Office with work provided Win laptop. Given MS ported Office to ...

Switched to Mint from Ubuntu when Unity happened. Have otherwise tinkered with Linux off/on since early 90s when having to install with floppies.

Re: Mint boots via usb2 but not via usb3
And you able to get to Grub menu when booting USB3? Hold down shift key during boot. If not, might try resetting BIOS to factoring settings and then resetup.

Re: Mint boots via usb2 but not via usb3
If you have a USB3 stick, you might try creating a fresh Mint install stick to see if Mint 18 boots on USB3, if not try a Mint 17 install stick. Might help narrow down where the issue is.

Need simple video editor to crop beg/end of video
I'm looking for a simple video editor that chops off beginning/end of a video and that's it. Would be nice to save in various codecs but keeping original format is fine. I've tried a few but too many steps to do this task. Have many to do, if it can be via CLI, scripting it even better as I want to ...
