Re: Your computers and Operating systems

Oh boy oh boy oh boy, a thread where it's OK to go full gear-geek! :D My computer history probably won't match up to others' here, but here goes anyway. WARNING: This is a long one, people-- I will be "waxing eloquent". You can skip to the TL;DR section for my current inventory. I first le...

Re: The "Everything works just fine" thread

Here's the stats on my Dell Optiplex 760, which I use as one of my two "daily driver" computers at home (the other being an iMac). I started with 17 Qiana on this, and Mint installed with nary a hiccup. Upgrades through 17.3 have been happily uneventful as well. I've heard good things abou...

Hmm. Lubuntu VM on a Mint machine. Insert "Yo Dawg I Heard You Like Linux..." meme here. :)

Re: Advantages (32bit vs 64bit) Linux Mint 18

... So that being the case why would anyone need more than 4.0 GB ram. What would an end user be running that would ever need more than 4.0 GB ram when running any Linux Distro. From what I understand, Photoshop is quite memory-intensive when using multiple filters and/or layers on high-resolution ...

I have a couple of suggestions/comments/observations on some of your issues... 4. Opening an already-opened program opens new instance : This varies from application to application. Re: Doesn't my Desktop look pretty :)

Both backgrounds are quite nice. Night Wing , yours is a very good example of correct HDR/tone mapping. The details in the darker regions are crisp, and the color palette is gently enhanced-- the sunset colors still look natural. I've seen some attempts at shots like this where the tone mapping was ...

Re: What is old oldest computer you saved with Linux?

My olde MSI netbook clocks in at around 2010 and so isn't that old but the atom n455 CPU clocks slower than a 1.2 GHz PIII. Machine still under renovation. I've got one of these, just a year older than your netbook: http://www.cnet.com/products/acer-aspire-one-d250/specs/ The Lenovo Ideapad S10 in ...

Re: Ubuntu To Drop 32-bit Desktop and Server Installers?

I'm also an advocate on maintaining older hardware. I have a single-core Atom-based netbook (the Lenovo in my sig) on which I run Mint Xfce 32-bit. I keep it around because it's small and extremely portable, yet still has a 160 Gb hard drive. It can store and play a decent selection of videos at nea...

Re: What is old oldest computer you saved with Linux?

A friend of a family member asked me to help him set up a new laptop, and let me take his old desktop in lieu of payment. It was a Dell Dimension 2400 circa late 2003/early 2004, powered by a single-core 2.2GHz Pentium 4 with only 512K ram and a 40 Gb HD. This was in my early days of GNU/Linux explo...

Re: I never see anyone talking about building Mint desktops!

I seems like most people I see on this forum, myself included, have minty laptops, but I rarely see anyone with a desktop signature or talking about building their own PC with mint. You may want to take a peek at my signature, then. :D I'm posting this reply from my Dell Optiplex 760 SFF desktop, w...

Re: What Windows software can you not do without?

There are really only two pressing reasons I keep a Windows installation (or two) alive... One is a Windows XP instance in a dual-boot arrangement on my iMac, specifically for Cakewalk Sonar 5, a MIDI/audio DAW. I've tried to run it in a VM, but there's too much latency, and attempting to run it in ...

Re: Weather applet doesn't work anymore

I confirm that mattst's fix above worked for me. Instead of deleting the existing "weather@mockturtl" directory, I renamed it to "OLDweather@mockturtl". Same effect, but allowed me to revert if the fix hadn't worked.

Thanks, mattst!

Re: Digikam 4.7 on 17.1 Cinnamon

Your error output indicates that the program you're trying to load has dependency issues. That is, in order to work, this program needs to install certain other libraries (these are like DLLs in Windows), and it can't because doing so conflicts with a library already in the Mint system. In your case...

Since we're talking about Firefox alternatives, which of these run well on older hardware? Mr_Reed , the Dell XPS 210 in my signature is powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4 GHz-- the same processor in your original question. Its vintage is 2006; it currently has 4 GB RAM and a Radeon HD 2400 video card by ATI (the previous owner was a gamer and wanted a dedicated video card). Here...

I like satire when it's done right, and this is a pretty good example. I must admit that I snickered at the photo of KJU at the "Chosan Infant Formula Factory" from earlier in the Twitter feed, partly because I remember the photo from its original use. That stuff is actually industrial lub...
