I'm surprised (just a little) that this would affect Chromium. What version of Chromium did you try this on? I'm on version 122.0.6261.128 (Official Build) built on Debian 12.5, running on Debian 12.0 (64-bit) and I have uBo installed just fine.

I would try simple-scan (that is its name in Synaptic, but shows up in the menu as "Document Scanner"). I use it with my HP and it works perfectly.

What desktop are you using, Cinnamon, Mate, or Xfce? I use Mate, and in the folder view I have my files grouped by type, but when opening files, in the open file dialog box, they show up there in straight alphabetical order, not grouped by type. Perhaps your problem is something similar?
