Re: How to stop Rhythmbox adding files until i tell it!!
What I do is create a playlist and then drag 'n drop the files from the file manager.

Re: How to stop Rhythmbox adding files until i tell it!!
In Rhythmbox Edit > Preferences > Music there's a checkbox for 'Watch my library for new files". If it is selected I think that's the problem.

Yes, Alt-drag is a definitely a bandaid.
I was so sure that autohide was the problem that now I'm flummoxed. In panel properties expand should be selected. If no one here has an answer you might want to try the Mate forum.

Good luck,

Alt-drag from anywhere in the window gets it out from under the panel. And, in panel properties de-select autohide.

Re: opening a PDF document
This works in Mate/Caja, otherwise results may vary.
Open the file manager and right-click the pdf file (left-click for left handed setups), select Open With > Other Application > select the preferred application, and make sure that 'Remember this application ...' is checked. Job done.

Cellidh2: this rather common and useless 'feature' is controlled, in Mate, by Control Panel > Windows > Placement > Windows Snapping > Enable side by side tiling. Set it to Off.

Re: Caja Music "hover" no longer working 17.1 XFCE
I use caja as my default file manager The default file manager in XFCE is Thunar, which does not have sound file preview. Caja would need to be installed separately. So, the first question is, does the file manager Help > About confirm Caja? If Caja was installed separately it's possible that the '...

Re: Remove Shutdown, Hibernate, Suspend options MATE?
Halt is runlevel 0 and runs scripts in /etc/rc0.d, and Restart is 6 and runs /etc/rc6.d. Move all the Halt scripts to a safe storage space, I used /etc/rc0.d/storage, and copy the Restart scripts to /etc/rc0.d. Selecting Halt now Restarts.
It's a dirty fix but it works for me.

Re: installed XFCE desktop environment to Cinnamon- a mistak
To clarify my previous message:
Launch Mint and get to the KDE desktop. At that point, when fully in Mint, logout (not shutdown) and the screen will go black for a few seconds, and display a dialog box to re-login. This is the place to change the session.

Re: installed XFCE desktop environment to Cinnamon- a mistak
I haven't use KDE so take this with a grain of salt. Logout and a login dialog box is displayed in a few seconds. What it looks like depends on the login theme. There should be an option to change the session, and in that option is listed all available desktops. Make a session choice and, at login, ...

Re: installed XFCE desktop environment to Cinnamon- a mistak
I use Mint 17.1/64 with Mate, Cinnamon and Xfce to no ill effect. I started with Mate, installed, removed and reinstalled Cinnamon, installed and removed Xfce. I recognize that there are many desktops and that there can certainly be conflicts, but these three play well together on my hardware. If I ...

Re: Special character
My work-around would be store a bunch of special characters, and perhaps some words, in a 'note' program like Xpad or Cherrytree, and, when I need one, copy and paste.

Re: 17.1 and permissions
Here's another approach that will get you where you want to go. Create a group (ie yourself, family), give read/write permissions to the group, and make them members of the group.
Good Luck.

One option. and perhaps a work-around, is to launch dconf Editor and sort thru the various settings. Unfortunately not all the key bindings are at one place in the list. Good Luck.

Re: 17 to 17.1 - No Option For Upgrade
This is an interesting quandry. The first thing to do is confirm that the system is actually 17 and not 17.1. The installed Mint version is reported in Sysinfo, System profiler, and part of the output when inxi -Fxc0 is entered in a Terminal. The Edit menu item is available when the Update Manager i...

Re: Linux Mint 17: Strange Cut-and-Paste Bug
Grasping at more straws. The 'multiples of old stuff' are either coming from an undo buffer or a copy buffer. Is there a special clipboard manager involved? Piggybacking on Flemur's comment, are there any custom keyboard shortcuts involved?

Firefox settings are stored in ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/prefs.js. If that file in particular can be recovered then much is solved.

Re: Linux Mint 17: Strange Cut-and-Paste Bug
I have not experienced the problem so I can't speak directly to it, but that doesn't stop me from having an opinion. I doubt that Mint is part of the problem, especially since there are so many other suspects that are closer to the action. If the keyboard is used for cut-and-paste then this looks li...
