Re: Dropbox on multi-boot machines

You can't preserve permissions with cifs, it is a windows protocol and doesn't understand linux. If you want to preserve linux permissions you will need to use nfs. I know enough to connect to a server with nfs but that's where my knowledge ends. OK, thx...I was becoming aware of that. No matter wh...

Re: Dropbox on multi-boot machines

OK, I want to add a file server function to my headless debian server. Pretty easy via samba & cifs by adding a share in smb.conf in the server and an entry in the client's fstab file. But I'd like to retain the same ownership and permissions for my files both in both the server and the client. ...

Re: Dropbox on multi-boot machines

Yeah, that seems logical to me too. I've been resisting because I did not originally set up my network that way. It means redoing quite a few things.

[Solved] Dropbox on multi-boot machines

Using Basic (free) Dropbox for years. Very convenient on my home network where I have multiple machines each with multiple instances of various linux distros. Essentially I've been using it to sync most of my data files to whichever machine or distro is booted. Now free Dropbox is limited to 3 insta...

Re: Wireguard VPN fails with some kernels?

As @gostal implied, the wg issue was kernel based. Early on, there was no kernel support, so a wireguard module had to be installed. Later kernel support was added, but did not work well in all cases. Currently (Nov 15, 2020), everything seems resolved...at least as far as installation and use goes....

Re: Thunderbird too old?

To the best of my knowledge, all Thunderbird installations, which access the shared Thunderbird user profile, have to be on the same application version, e.g. 78.4.0. Yes, and you're right, LMDE gets 78.4 from it's repo. So there is no issue with TD on all 3 of my OSes! Thank you! In addition, I di...

Re: Thunderbird too old?

Karl, I've gone over your links and agree with this path. I like apt and the debian repos ...much easier to maintain a system. One quirk with my setup. I moved the .thunderbird file from /home/user to /home/user/data where "data" is all my data on a common drive and mounts the same in each...

Re: [Solved] LMDE borked...hardware or software?

This thread was a bit confusing because I was not sure whether the issue was hardware or software related. For anyone with a similar issue, I'll try to summarize here. 1. On my multiboot machine one linux OS, LMDE-3 became unresponsive. I was never able to figure out why. Researching the logs would ...

Re: LMDE borked...hardware or software?

Yes, the other OSes are all detected. I've installed current LTS versions of mint & lmde. Ubuntu is still the older one and it's on the 1st SSD partition. You're right, I'd like grub on the linux SSD. Can I do that simply during ubun_20 install by choosing that as my grub location? I think so......

Re: LMDE borked...hardware or software?

Afraid I dug a deep hole. Did three things. 1: based on another poster, went into BIOS and settings. Legacy-EFI boot to only EFI boot, and also the boot order. This caused immediate problems so changed back to Legacy-EFI boot. 2. Used gdisk to convert MBR to GPT. 3. Installed LMDE_4 via iso. on SSD ...

Re: LMDE borked...hardware or software?

thx for the reply! I use fsarchiver for OS and have a good backup of LMDE. However, this is probably a good time to install LMDE-4. I usually go from LTS versions to the next one...Ubuntu and Mint are also on previous LTS versions. So maybe a major redo is in order. When setting up this machine, I u...

Depending on the results I would most likely disconnect the other drives while addressing this problem.
I posted the results of the two cmds that all41 gave me, and was hoping that he could follow up on this.

Re: Thunderbird too old?

I had other priorities...and procrastinated on this. Still trying to decide the best alternative. If getting TB directly from their site, not sure how to maintain it. Put a hold on TB in the Mint repo (to disable snap)? And then how to update from the TB site? Same question about "flatpak"...

Re: LMDE borked...hardware or software?

In multi-boot systems sometimes grub is updated on a partition that is not the partition your bios is set to boot to. Especially because kernel updates run a grub update after downloading. I'll try this tomorrow. I did have a recent kernel update. The odd thing is that the SSD partition that LMDE w...

Re: LMDE 3 is no longer supported

LMDE-3 may be no longer supported, but it should still operate OK I believe. It may be prudent to upgrade, but not upgrading for a while should not be harmful, right? The reason for asking is that I was running LMDE-3 on a multiboot linux machine and had an unexpected problem on LMDE-3. After a peri...

Crash on multiboot machine: hardware or software?

Multibooting: Ubuntu, Mint, and LMDE. All OSes are on a solid state drive. The computer runs constantly; I reboot into another OS once a week or so. LMDE had been up for about a week and began to get flakey...unresponsive apps etc. Tried to do a normal shutdown, but could not, so did a hard one. On ...

Re: LMDE borked...hardware or software?

Not sure why you're upset. I'm looking for help, not a fight. I'm in a Catch-22. LMDE seems to be borked. I cannot see it in GRUB and so cannot boot into it. When I look for info about the SSD it's on I get strange info. I should have LMDE listed on the 3rd partition of the SSD but it does not appea...
