Re: Btrfs vs ZFS mirroring / self healing 2 4TB drives
As always... Grateful to those who provide guidance or suggestions with experience on what they speak. I am clearly out of my realm. I'm unlikely to install a VM . Had all that on Solaris, and it's not in the plan. I don't mind messing around with REAL hardware. Because at the end, I'll likely have ...

Re: Btrfs vs ZFS mirroring / self healing 2 4TB drives
Mint Install disk refused to put the boot loader in a FAT32 partition. ??? I just read a bunch of things on boot partitions... will rework the drives later. One of the questions that has risen is with ONLY two drives in the system, how to I create the RAID1 for the filesystem... do I mount the addit...

Re: Btrfs vs ZFS mirroring / self healing 2 4TB drives
I had several unsuccessful attempts to load Mint 18.2 onto a Btrfs partition . Did not provide a swap or boot partition. That may have been the issue. I prepared the 2nd drive with the same partitions, but have not loaded Mint onto them. Perhaps I should remove the FAT32 and make it Btrfs as well. I...

Re: Btrfs vs ZFS mirroring / self healing 2 4TB drives
Thanks for the additional tips... I knew about reboot... problem is I loose access to the system until I go upstairs and initialize x11vnc again. So reboots come once a day unless I get really anxious to see what's happening. There is a lot to learn about Btrfs, and I suppose reading the manual migh...

Re: Btrfs vs ZFS mirroring / self healing 2 4TB drives
Added to fstab UUID=78c9e951-b9ef-4d1b-a789-ca9fe4941699 /ark btrfs defaults, ssd, noatime 0 2 I don't reboot very often as it means going up two flights of stairs to restart x11vnc. I should fix that so it loads itself. Would like to copy bootable contents of: UUID=415bfd24-064f-44f4-94c0-733296d35fd...

Re: Btrfs vs ZFS mirroring / self healing 2 4TB drives
Installed the drives, and followed directions... got this far... do I have to mount it? Thought I'd loose more than I did... 720GB for RAID isn't too bad I guess. mint-18 ~ # mkfs.btrfs -d raid1 -m raid1 /dev/sdc /dev/sdd -f btrfs-progs v4.4 See http://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org for more information. Re: Btrfs vs ZFS mirroring / self healing 2 4TB drives
My thanks to all who replied. Unfortunately I think ZFS is out of my league on this project. My machine is an ASUS High End Motherboard with AMD 8350 $ 32GB of RAM. However it is NOT ECC as the motherboard would not support it. I would have to buy a server to get that grade of equipment. And somewhe...

Btrfs vs ZFS mirroring / self healing 2 4TB drives
I'm running Nextcloud, and want DATA INTEGRITY for myself and those who use it. Backups are exceedingly slow when you get 500 GB of storage let alone down the road when others catch on to what they can do. Bought two Toshiba 4TB drives w 64MB of cache... and have spent the last two + days reviewing ...

Remmina & Keyboard issues
I have many computers/servers that require management. These are diversely distributed throughout my 6200 sq ft home on 3 different floors. My main operating point is an office on the first floor. 4 of the 5 systems are Linux Mint, 3 of the 4 Mint systems are 18.2 Cinnamon and one is 17.3 KDE, and t...

dd, rsync or Midnight Commander for Nextcloud backup
Over the past 3 days I've investigated methods of backing up my system. The first one I tried was dd. dd was incredibly slow migrating files at aprox 7MB/sec. The next one I tried was rsync which successfully copied 410GB of files in approx 15 hours. After looking at the format of the copied files I...

Re: Fresh install on ZFS ?
Thank you for your response. Very helpful! Since I have a working system already. Perhaps what I should do is to install the two new 4TiB drives... format them for ZFS, then set up mirroring, then move the complete contents of the old drive over to the new ZFS drive pair.. Your thoughts ? I suppose ...

rsync vs midnight commander
I just finished backing up Nextcloud using rsync to a USB drive using Nextcloud's recommended technique rsync -Aax nextcloud/ nextcloud-dirbkp_`date +"%Y%m%d"`/ This took MANY hours to complete. Probably around 8 or there abouts. After completing this and looking at the contents with midni...

Fresh install on ZFS ?
I've been researching for a few days now. Have downloaded zfs-07.1.tar.gz and noted that an Ubuntu ZFS PPA is available as well. Wanting to get the OS installed on a ZFS file system. Wondered if I could start the system on a LIVE disk, then get the PPA to configure the hard drives. 2ea 4TiB 7200 rpm...

Re: LVM issues no more... all RESOLVED
Yes, all is well. But I'm finding it difficult to believe how many words are necessary to describe how to do something so ultimately simple. My second LVM addition took only a few minutes once I cleaned Solaris off the disk. Linux thinks Solaris partitions are swap space... so had to wipe the disk c...
