Re: Thumbdrive between Mint & Win10?
This has always been my solution: Just say no. Windows complains because it doesn't understand that the stick and the files are fine. I wish that were an option - my wife's real estate business requires Windows 10 for all of the software packages that are used. She runs it all from her home office ...

Re: Thumbdrive between Mint & Win10?
sarge816, When you formatted the thumbdrive, did you do it in Windows or Mint? I've tried it both ways Jerry, doesn't seem to make much difference. I found an article about "properly" ejecting drives in Linux before plugging them into Windows, so I may experiment with unmounting the usb d...

Re: Thumbdrive between Mint & Win10?
That's good information, thank you for responding with such specific information. I was hoping it wasn't a hardware issue, but it might be. I mainly use USB3 drives with USB3 ports across all computers, both desktops and laptops. USB2 seems to be slightly less problematic, but I haven't done extensi...

Thumbdrive between Mint & Win10?
Anyone solved the problem of using a USB thumbdrive between LM & Windows? Basically, if I copy any files from LM to the drive and then insert it into any of my Win10 machines, Windows complains that the drive may have errors. If I let Windows try to fix it, invariably some files go missing. Othe...

Installing and running Windscribe via the terminal is easy peasy - if you are already familiar with it, i can assure you it works fine in Linux. Paid subscriber here and use it on both Windows and Linux Mint.

Even a smart tv is "dumb" if you don't connect it to the interweb. I do acknowledge guilt in just about every other tech category though.

Re: 1.5 GB RAM OK?
YES - - the Mate Desktop, would be better, with an better user interface, than what you would experience with the XFCE Desktop experience. I'd have to say that would be personal preference, as I prefer the customizability and user interface of Xfce far more than Mate, and I use it over Cinnamon as ...

Re: Looking for a new phone
Moto G Power would be the phone i'd buy right now if I needed one. My venerable Moto G4 was unlocked and rooted, sitting in a drawer when my oldest at A&M broke his iphone. He opted to use the Moto rather than buy a new iphone, and it is currently working like new on Red Pocket GMSA.

Re: Looking for a new phone
Yup, Apple products are over priced and extremely over-rated. Wife will use only an iphone, I've used both and Android is fine but with some caveats. The non-ios phones generally are not nearly as well made, and it shows in the weight and quality of the product. You also will generally not get as mu...

Re: Which graphics accelerator for Cinnamon 19.3 32-bit
At least it appears you have that netbook maxed out in ram at 2GB. I have a similar machine and it runs Xfce ok. If you're still using a mechanical hard drive, a huge speed increase would be to upgrade to an SSD - it's like night and day. A small 120GB SSD can be had for less than $25 these days and...

Re: American College is a Waste of Money
I agree completely. The price of college is almost out of reach for most without going into debt with student loans. And this is why college has gotten so expensive IMO - the university knows the kids will have to borrow money, the banks are going to lend it, and the college can charge exorbitant am...

Re: Stop Windows update from borking Mint/GRUB by creating more recovery partitions.
If you figure out the whole multiple drive thing, you can always download a tool that completely disables Windows Updates altogether as well. That is what I do on all of my computers that cannot be Linux only.

Just a request to all those Dell Latitude and HP Probook owners out there, are those machines completely compatible with Linux? I have always had great luck with Dell Latitudes and Linux. Typing to you right now on my venerable old E6410, worked perfectly out of the box. I also had Dell Precisions ...

15.6" with these new fangled 16:9 screens (much prefer 16:10 ratio), but 1920x1080 is really hard on the eyes in LM Xfce. It just doesn't scale well, and standard HD resolution 720p is easier to read, too.

Re: Using Mint on Intel Atom processor
We may have identical netbooks - mine is a Dell Inspiron Mini10 with the exact specs as yours. I currently use it to run our home security system with Windows 7 32bit, but it used to run Linux Mint all the way back to 2009 (mine came with Ubuntu preinstalled). I can tell you that the current LM19.3,...

Re: HP Compaq 8000 Elite CMT - upgrade to better M/B with faster CPU
You might have a hard time upgrading the motherboard, as Compaq and other oem pc makers like using proprietary motherboards that don't necessarily fit in standard ATX cases. If it is a standard ATX or micro ATX then you have lots of options. You didn't post what the specs are either, it might be jus...

Re: Mate Destroys Cinnamon (Performance) v19.3, v20
I prefer Xfce, but I generally agree with your analysis. I saw it most on old computers, where on a Core2 Duo Cinnamon had performance issues and on the same laptop Xfce ran like a top.

Re: bad fps issue
No, the opposite. I'm telling you I dual boot my computers with Windows if that computer is going to play games, mainly because Windows drivers are usually better optimized. The game developer rarely even cares about Linux compatibility, so little time is spent trying to make it work. I tried for a ...

Re: bad fps issue
Really neat site, thanks for the link. That's probably about right for that CPU (the test appears to be CPU speed capped). As a reference, I just tested it with a nearly as ancient Dell Latitude E6410 (from 2010) with a 1st Gen i5, 4GB DDR3 and Nvidia NVS-3100M 512MB with the 340 drivier in LM19. Av...
