Mint from USB [Solved]
I have recently been given an old dell Netbook and I'd like to put Mint on it. No CD/DVD drive of course, so using the easy method is not possible. I had a quick look at a few sites on how to load Mint on to a USB stick, but it was all technical/GRUB/YUM stuff which gives me a headache. I can boot i...

Re: 'De-administrating' User
Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the nature of 'root' then, as I've seen many warnings about accessing the internet 'logging in as root'. If you log in with your user name, then you're not root. Subsequent users that you add are not granted the ability to escalate privileges by default so they would no...

'De-administrating' User
This is such a silly question that I'm embarrassed to post it, but given that you guys are such an unforgiving bunch... I have two users on my machine, me and my wife. My wife's user does not have admin rights. However, ever since I set up my first Mint distro (7, since you ask) I've got into the ha...

Re: Mint 13 Performance Tips?
Only adding Mate doesn't make it unstable, so you might just do that. But your earlier post adds (after the terminal instruction to install Mate) " I don't know if some Cinnamon stuff has to be uninstalled, but if so it might make your system less stable, I'm not sure. "This sentence is w...

Re: Mint 13 Performance Tips?
Since it is a new install I would choose to reinstall and then select the Mate-version of the distro. But if you want you can install Mate sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate I don't know if some Cinnamon stuff has to be uninstalled, but if so it might make your system less stable, I'm not sure. No...

Re: Mint 13 Performance Tips?
It's Cinnamon. Can you point me to a tutorial on changing the desktop environment?Kalyk wrote:Which desktop environment did you use, Cinnamon or Mate?
Today I installed Linux Mint 16 Mate on a desktop machine with the same specs and it really was very fast and snappy.

Mint 13 Performance Tips?
I installed Mint 13 a few months ago. The performance is truly appalling - does it really gobble up so much more resources than my previous Mint 9? It is really bad when there are two sessions open, but even normal operations in single user can be very slow. My config is as screenshot below. I accep...

Re: Updating Mint
Thanks Dave. The printer actually seems to be working now too, though I'll hold my cheers until it's been working for 6 months - on M9 it worked for a while, then gave up the ghost. Unfortunately xfce means nothing to me, and since Mint 13 'works' I'm not really inclined to try other distros, at lea...

Re: Updating Mint
Update from Mint 9 to 13 went relatively smoothly, although laptop now running perceptibly - though not critically - slower. I did a complete clean install, having tried the CD boot up first, to confirm that the wireless worked out of the box. First install failed after 28 mins into the installation...

Re: Updating Mint
Thanks for that advice Dave. Will give v13 a try.
The numbering conventions always puzzle me. Why is support for v15 (which is presumably - BIG presumption I know - newer than v13) running out before support for v13?

Re: Updating Mint
Is it possible to get a USB version of a stable later version? I did play around with a USB distro called Puppy Linux about 2 years ago, and thought it was quite sweet. I had some fun with a friend showing him how I could connect to the internet on the laptop from which he had recently removed the h...

Updating Mint
I am currently using Mint 9 Isadora, and have been for a couple of years now. It gives me no problems, or more specifically it gives me no problems with wifi internet connection, the deal-breaker. I did try both 10 and 12 on other computers, but on both I had problems with wifi (reliability, rather ...

Re: PDF Sizes
In Open Office I use 'Print' and then choose PDF as the output, rather than 'Export as PDF'. I didn't realise there was any difference between the two options. To be honest, I am more concerned about the scenario where I am importing several JPEG files and exporting them to PDF using PDFSAM or whate...

PDF Sizes
Whenever I print using the 'Print to PDF in Home Folder' feature, the resulting file is often much larger than I'd expect. Ditto when I have used programs to convert to PDF eg PDFSAM or GSCAN2PDF. For example, I have just imported 4 JPEGs total size 1.3mb into GSCAN2PDF; the exported PDF was a 4mb f...

Speeding up Virtualbox
I've got Windows XP running in Virtualbox on Mint 9. It does all it is supposed to do - which isn't much as I only want Windows because I can't get my printer to run in Mint - but everything it does is INCREDIBLY slow. Does anyone have any tips for speeding up the performance?
