Re: Aptitude/apt vs. Mint Update

I was confused because Cosmo said that MintUpdate uses apt and that shouldn't be mixed with aptitude. If I use apt from the command line, then /usr/local/bin/apt is used? Is the package database used by aptitude different from the one used by apt-get? If so, is there not a conflict if I use apt bec...

Re: Aptitude/apt vs. Mint Update

But /usr/local/bin/apt isn't the real apt. The API is provided by libapt, part of the real apt package, which also provides apt-get. Mint has a python script named apt, the one in /usr/local/bin. This can be confusing, especially as the real apt package now also contains an executable called apt (/u...

Re: I Found This disturbing Article about Micro$oft and Lenovo

A Linux kernel developer had this to say about it: https://mjg59.dreamwidth.org/44694.html

I haven't read the comments, but he seems to think it's a driver issue after all.

That machine isn't a Lenovo by any chance, is it?

Lenovo has been known to mess with people's rights to use their computers as they see fit. Here's a recent Reddit thread about that: https://m.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/5 ... ogram_now/

Remote avatar from that site (which is actually linuxmint-art.org and not llinuxminart.org).

The authentication request appears to be triggered by your avatar. Are you sure you didn't set up a remote avatar with a link to that site?

Re: Can't install Linux mint 18

Assuming this is a fairly new machine, does it have a UEFI instead of a BIOS? Could "Secure Boot" be switched on? To be honest, I have no idea whether that could have this kind of effect, but it's probably worth checking. Try to enter the UEFI when booting (not sure what key to press to do that - it...

Schultz wrote:How do you do this (simulated)?
Use any of the switches -s, --simulate, --just-print, --dry-run, --recon or --no-act with apt-get (check the man page). E.g.

Code: Select all

apt-get -s remove libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37
Yes, you can run that without sudo.

Try a simulated apt-get remove for the package and see what else disappears.

Re: formatted boot partition I think

You've probably got the Boot directory and bootmgr file on both partitions now. That doesn't matter. No need to remove things. If the dual W7 option in the GRUB menu really bothers you, you could remove those items from sda2 and run update-grub again. But to be honest, I would just leave things alon...

Re: formatted boot partition I think

Did the cp command work properly. i.e. are the directory boot and the file bootmgr actually present on sda1? If you mount sda1 like before (sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 - assuming the directory /mnt/sda1 still exists - recreate it if it doesn't) and you enter the command ls -laR /mnt/sda1 ...

Re: formatted boot partition I think

I tried using an app called boot-repair-disk. There is an option to repair MBR?, and after resetting boot to hdd just error saying no bootmgr. Re-boot with that stick and repair grub, it boots ok into mint. What i have noticed though is after running that repair in Gparted the sda2 is flagged as bo...

Re: formatted boot partition I think

OK. Try this in a terminal: cd ~/Downloads/en_windows_7_home_premium_with_sp1_x64_dvd_u_676549 sudo mkdir /mnt/sda1 sudo mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /mnt/sda1 sudo cp -vt /mnt/sda1 boot bootmgr That's assuming sda1 has already been reformatted to ntfs and the ISO is mounted at the same point you mention...

Re: formatted boot partition I think

As the machine in question does not have a UEFI but a BIOS (it's running W7 on an MBR formatted disk, so is has to), you don't need the efi stuff. I'd go for just the boot directory and the bootmgr file.
No guarantees it will work, of course. Could be my cousin was just lucky.

Re: formatted boot partition I think

The sda1 partition looks rather small, so I doubt it was a full recovery partition. Could have been just a Windows boot partition (which microsoft calls the System partition - the actual system partition is called the Boot partition - well, it's microsoft, so why be logical about it...). You could t...

Re: time synchronization issue

That's the alternative, yes. By the way, Windows 10 64-bit appears to use a qword rather than a dword. Also, make sure Windows' internet time synchronisation is switched off. And of course there are reports this doesn't always work on W10 Home Editions: http://superuser.com/questions/975717/does-win...

Re: time synchronization issue

Considering microsoft has always been too stupid to make its junk use UTC by default, it's probably vice versa. The solution is to either switch Windows to UTC or Linux to local time. The former is a pain because network time synchronisation will either fail or keep resetting things. The latte...

Re: What happened to getdeb repository in Linux mint 18 xfce?

1) Download and install the getdeb package, (double click once downloaded - easiest, and the one I recommend) Really? Has this been fixed then? It used to create a broken getdeb.list file in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/, using the Mint codename instead of the Ubuntu one. 2) Set up the repository manual...
