Re: My initial observations of LMDE

I haven't re-installed it yet, will probably do that on the weekend, but I think I will start with a Debian base and not use the LMDE LiveCD. In that case won't you be just installing Debian? I don't think a Debian install with a few packages from Mint repos can be considered as installing LMDE. Th...

Re: How to install nvidia driver on LMDE?

Wonderful, this worked for me too! I can now finally use a monitor resolution that doesn't hurt my eyes so much. Only thing that still doesn't seem to work is Compiz: I tried checking the "wobbly windows" checkbox to test it, but nothing happens. Anyway, I'm glad to have "normal"...

Re: Romeo + Mint Debian?

Thanks! Say, did those minor problems with MintMenu involve all of the icons disappearing? If so, I know it firsthand now. Funny thing is, I'm not sure I want to fix it. You get a lot more real estate for favorite items when all the eye candy gets removed. Or maybe that isn't the same proble...

Re: Romeo + Mint Debian?

I use Romeo and haven't had major problems with it. There was some minor problems with MintMenu when it's icon structure changed (easily fixed) but apart from that it has been smooth sailing. I intend to disable Romeo when Squeeze goes stable and convert my system to a stable squeeze one with backpo...

Re: Mint Debian

Debian release update. The Release Managers held a meeting in Paris on October 2-3 and sent an update on the status of Squeeze. They would like to release Debian 6.0 Squeeze before Christmas. The number of RC bugs is steadily going down, less than 200 bugs needs to be fixed, at this time. /me does ...

Dude, you are persistent. 8) I would have given up. (I will not call you obsessive.)  Not really, I opened a terminal and this fortuune popped up. I then thought it was an opportune time to take a screenshot. So it's more taking advantage of the moment :) As for the terminal in LM...

Re: Linux Mint Debian

Mint (Ubuntu) never allowed root login by default (root account has a random password and root login to the GUI is disabled). Ubuntu yes, Mint no. Mint sets the root password to be the same as the user password. You can test this by using 'su' (not sudo su) to start a root terminal or logging in to...

This isn't the same as dist-upgrade with a terminal and apt. The level 4 and 5 updates still won't be applied unless you choose to include them in the preferences.

Re: Maverick approaching final release.

You are booting from USB? Yes, not knowing of this bug I used gparted to wipe then recreate a fat32 partiton before I started (my standard practice as I don't trust the ubuntu creator to wipe the disk properly). I also created the usb from a separate iso image (on another usb drive) rather than the...

Re: Maverick approaching final release.

I have to say though - the bug that stops it being made into a bootable USB is frustrating ... I have yet to find a solution that works. Typical Ubuntu major bug that goes into a release. Is that a known bug? I haven't experienced it yet and I'm typing this from a USB boot. Edit: I should lo...

I'll try it like I do with most distros. Usually via a virtualbox or usb boot. It looks like it will be another great release if Ubuntu 10.10 is anything to go by :)

^ My guess would be is that you installed your nvidia driver the manual way and a kernel update has broken it. The grub issue may be purely coincidental.

Re: Really rolling?

Just thinking out loud here. I'm getting the impression that we're not applying the definition of "rolling" correctly here. I even find myself thinking of "rolling" as relating to Debian where a true rolling release would mean using sid (unstable), not testing or at least testin...
