Re: Video playback freezes every 30 seconds

Wayland doesn't have this issue at all. I was right, it is only present in Xorg. You are also using a different display manager (MDM instead of LightDM), correct? Just wanted to verify you made two changes and not just one. With Mint 20, it's gnome-shell and gdm3 that are needed for Wayland to my k...

Re: Video playback freezes every 30 seconds

The fact that Windows doesn't freeze up every 30 seconds, but Linux does, suggests to me that there's an issue with the BIOS sending wrongful lid state change notifications every 30 seconds that Windows ignores or handles more smoothly and could then mean one or more bugs for Xorg, or there's a bug ...

Re: Video playback freezes every 30 seconds

So the cause is closing the laptop lid. That is a physical hardware switch on the laptop. I believe the next step is for the switch to send a signal to the firmware (BIOS/UEFI) for the next action. Is there a setting in your BIOS for what to do if the lid is closed? Different manufacturers have dif...

Video playback freezes every 30 seconds on Dell Latitude 7400 with external monitor

[ admin note: split from related topic by another user https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=361633 ] Having this exact same issue on a Dell Latitude 7400 and I can now re-create and terminate this issue at will. Once the issue starts, the system freezes for about one second every 30...

Re: GNU IceCat?

Firefox continues to by default be more and more horrible, spying on you more and allowing corporations to control your web browsing experience. One example of this is the tab focus stuff which allows websites to know if you're currently looking at them, or if and when you've switched away to anothe...

Re: Will LinuxMint ever support wayland?

Xorg is insecure, so anyone concerned about security should be pushing for Wayland. Yes that might be a fact, but the fact remains that unless wayland's instability has been resolved, and it's safe bet it hasn't yet..otherwise the LM team involving Clem would be implementing it by default instead o...

Re: No HDMI audio on NVIDIA driver 460 while 450 works fine

Had a quick browse through the changelog for 5.8, and yeah I don't see the fixes that are in 5.4: http://changelogs.ubuntu.com/changelogs/pool/main/l/linux/linux_5.8.0-51.57/changelog As well as the 5.4 kernel fix, on the same day I also installed an update for the Nvidia 450 branch driver. I'm not...

Re: Will LinuxMint ever support wayland?

Yes, well, the issue is/was that Wayland fixed such issues by removing ability to do that which was potentially insecure at all. I.e., copy-paste between applications was a problem for the longest time and although I believe that's mostly fixed now, copy-paste between native Wayland and XWayland ap...

Xorg is insecure, so anyone concerned about security should be pushing for Wayland. You can demonstrate some of that insecurity using this: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Sakaki/Sakaki%27s_EFI_Install_Guide/Sandboxing_the_Firefox_Browser_with_Firejail#Demonstrating_the_X11_Vulnerability If all ru...

Re: No HDMI audio on NVIDIA driver 460 while 450 works fine

Woofwoofs Foxy, or Stoaty I guess, or both ^n.n^ I'm actually using the latest 5.8 kernel available in the repos, 5.8.0-50-generic. So I'd be a bit surprised if the issue was fixed in the 5.4 branch but not the 5.8 branch, but maybe that's possible so I'll have to try it. I think I did restart pulse...

No HDMI audio on NVIDIA driver 460 while 450 works fine

Not sure why this is happening, if it's a kernel bug or NVIDIA driver bug or what, but the 460 driver makes my HDMI audio disappear. The workaround is to...disable power management apparently? See the below links. Wanted to share the solution for anyone else while the issue is being addressed. Worka...

I'm not going to encourage anyone to make a Github account because Github is controlled by Microsoft, which is an evil corporation, and so everyone should be moving away from Github.

Celluloid keeps losing "Controls" after enabling "Use skip buttons for controlling playlist"

I know github would be a better place to post this, but I don't have a github account nor will I ever due to Microsoft's acquisition. Even after disabling that checkbox again, Celluloid still randomly loses the "Controls" along the bottom of the window. "Randomly" here means tha...

Re: [file-roller] Cinnamon's default "Compress..." option .tar.gz leaks usernames

Hello, Yfrwlf. The citricized behaviour is actually a default feature of the .tar archive format. A .tar.gz archive in the end is an uncompressed .tar archive, in the default format, in which the comand tar will create .tar archives. This .tar archive is then compressed by gzip , which gives you th...

[file-roller] Cinnamon's default "Compress..." option .tar.gz leaks usernames

This is not a good security and privacy practice to have users using the default file compression option on some files before sending them to others when those files contain the user's exact username and group name (not just UID=1000 and GID=1000). Steps to reproduce: 1. Right click on a file or fol...

After rebooting or just killing Nemo, SFTP bookmarks work fine for me, but seemingly randomly now and then they stop working. I think I've seen the error you're referring to, but lately I just got this error, and this was right after booting my computer: Could not display "sftp://user@server/pa...

Celluloid not handling PLS playlists with remote SMB music files correctly

Steps to reproduce: 1. Create a .pls playlist containing music files from a remote SMB share (haven't tried SSH or other shares). 2. Try to open the playlist file with Celluloid. Problem that occurs: Music doesn't play, and instead I get one error per music file (very annoying, xkill is fastest res...

Re: Mouse selection gap in Nemo between folder icon and name of folder (at least at 4K)

But right now, selection-wise, they are two separate objects. We are forced to either use Gnome's ridiculously limited double scale, which defeats the purpose of having 4k, or increasing the font DPI in Cinnamon. Unfortunately LM is not fully HiDPI compatible due to there being no way to scale icon...

Mouse selection gap in Nemo between folder icon and name of folder (at least at 4K)

Run your mouse over a folder and you'll see that there is a tiny gap between the folder icon and the name of the folder. Clicking while in this gap will not select the folder. I'm used to folder icons+text being treated as one big lump that you can click anywhere on to select, and assume most users ...
