Re: Installing new BIOS?

If that is all you get, the first thing I'd be trying is a new BIOS Battery. In, and of itself, it should not display those symptoms, but it could be a cheap fix.

Re: Casual User looking to dig in to Mint and Mate

Why not go with min cinnamon on your stronger units and mint mate on the others? But I am biased. :) I agree with this suggestion. My only caveat would be for consistency across the board, use the Same DE on all machines. SO, if your low powered machines cope with Cinnamon, use that, otherwise use ...

Re: New here, New to Linux

Hi CMD-ky have a look at the FAQ at the top of the "Board Index" page right next to Quick Links, It might give you some idea. Also if you want to know more about a particular command, you can type man (cmd name) in a terminal and it will throw up a manual page about the command.

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

Whilst ISO verification is a desirable option. It is not critical (I almost NEVER do that) All that it does is ensure that the copy you've downloaded is complete. I usually just create a USB key (can't remember how in Windwoes any more, sorry) and boot from that. As Moem has already said, If I end u...

Your BIOS might just be "too quick" for you. Try pressing and holding F2 as you power up.

Re: Looking for guidance replacing MS Vista 64-bit with the newest Mint Cinnamon

Mint Cinnamon is arguably the best Linux for the average user, Certainly I have found it so. All you must do is download and install it. (very simplistic, but you get the idea) As for the "howls of derision" it was not so much aimed at the OS divide but more the Security aspects of using a...

Re: Linux mint

Be aware that, unless Quickbooks produce a Linux version of their software, you will not get Quickbooks work under Linux without having a Windows system in place. Either Dual Booting into Windows or via a Virtual Machine which could be WINE base or a VirtualBox.

If all you want to do is show the desktop there is a button already on the taskbar that does just that. Looks almost like a green folder.

That is to be my next attempt. given the raw "power" (sarcasm intended) of the system, I was hoping that it was just a little slow. Will play with his again in the morning. Thanks for your attempt at help, anyway.

Thanks for stating the OBVIOUS Moem, Unfortunately, even if you slap people across the face with the OBVIOUS they still will not notice it. Your suggestion, jaymot, would have merit but for the OBVIOUS, which Moem has already stated.

Instal frozen at "Where are you?"

I'm attempting to install Mint 18 XFCE on an old ACER desktop and install appears to have frozen at the screen that allows me to select my locale. No keyboard or mouse responses at all. Are there any potential hazards that I may need to be aware of. Prior to this the machine was happily running XP. ...

Re: Mint USB no longer boots

Could be a UEFI issue. I found that I could install Mint as dual boot with Windwoes 10 but it would not work stand alone. I turned off UEFI in BIOS and all is now well. I know others have convinced their machines to work with UEFI on stand alone Linux machines. So am unsure if the issue is Linux gen...

You could try and run QB in a VirtualBox. you will need a legal version of windwoes to run it in though. It might be a lot friendlier than WINE

Re: Netflix and ... Linux Mint

All of the above is well and good but a lot of work for one simple program. I, too, have not had any issues on my various machines running Netflix. Might I suggest the extreme step of booting from a live cd/usb and testing if it works from there. If so re-installing Linux from scratch sounds extreme...
