Re: Can Mint be installed onto and ran from a USB flash driv

Just FYI, while making a LiveUSB with persistence will do most, if not all, of what the OP wants, you actually can do a regular install onto a USB drive as you would onto a hdd drive. It will allow you to plug the USB drive into most computers, boot into it, and have a fully functioning Linux Mint a...

Re: battery?

When I turn on my Toshiba Satellite, running Mint 17 Mate, I get a brief message that the battery is weak or broken and is only at 55% even though it is constantly plugged into an outlet. Then when I point the mouse to the battery symbol on the panel it tells me that the thing is completely charged...

Re: Using audacity to record streaming audio?

No, you don't need a mic at all. The point of the above instructions was to record sound directly from your computer sound output using Audacity. So, if you can hear the audio through your computer speakers (or plug-in earphones), you should be able to record it.

Re: About Linux Mint 17

Yes, i know that many companies don't make linux versions (except steam). However. You can install a linux version of spotify, i have done so. Also, there are two ways of installing netflix, through netflix desktop and by means of pipelight. Mullvad already have a linux version. What I am lacking i...

Re: POLL : what's your favorite software on Linux Mint

These may be unsexy picks, but I love programs that just do their jobs and do them well:
  • 1. Gparted
    2. Gufw
    3. Synaptic
    4. MediaTomb (web-based media server)
    5. Deluge (bittorrent client)
    6. Hardinfo (system profiler and benchmark)
    7. Audacity (audio editor)
    8. UNetbootin
    9. Docky
    10. Calibre

Re: About Linux Mint 17

For me, upgrading from Mint 16 to Mint 17 (both Cinnamon editions) on my 9-year-old Toshiba R200 laptop actually made a small but noticeable difference in speed and stability. Mint 17 just "feels" better than Mint 16. On my work computers with AMD/ATi graphics cards (originally running Mint 13 LTS),...

Re: Games folder

As far as I know, there is no Games folder, since games are treated just like any other application installed on the system in Linux. So game files are installed in their appropriate places in the / directory with config files installed in /home/<user> as appropriate.

Re: Setting and restoring wallpaper

Right-click on your desktop. Then "Change Desktop Background" and pick one. Or... Control Center -> Appearance -> Background. Those directions would work in Cinnamon, but is that the way it works in Xfce? I've never run Xfce, so I can't comment one way or another. But as I was reading your advice, ...

Re: My 3º partition is not load every time i start the sessi

You can make sure that all three partitions are listed under your /etc/fstab file, which tells Linux what partitions to mount when it boots. Can you please copy/paste for us the output of this command (in Terminal): sudo blkid -o list And the output of this command (in Terminal): gksu gedit /etc/fst...

Re: 64 Gb Micro Sdcard wont mount

It's also possible that your SD card reader can't handle the newer higher-capacity cards because it can only read SDHC format. The highest capacity regular SDHC format goes is 32GB. Larger SD cards use the SDXC format, which older SD card readers can't access.

Re: should i update it ?

If everything in your system is working fine, then there is no need to update level-5 updates. Having said that, I personally update everything (I like being up-to-date). But I also have mechanisms in place to recover my system just in case something goes wrong. And, even after many years of followi...

Have you tried installing Mint 17? :) I was very happy with Mint 16 on my Toshiba laptop, but Mint 17 works even better, believe it or not. No guarantees, of course, but Mint 17 may get your sound to work. Even if it doesn't, it's worth upgrading to 17 anyways, since Mint 16 will lose support pretty...

Re: How to Turn a USB Flash Drive into Extra Virtual RAM?

The UUID of your USB flash drive is BDBE-F501 from the following line: /dev/sdb1 vfat KINGSTON /media/sylvester/KINGSTON BDBE-F501 So now, you can use gedit to edit your /etc/fstab file: gksu gedit /etc/fstab Add the following line(s) to your fstab file: # mount USB flash drive as swap UUID=BDBE-F50...

Re: Reinstalling Linux

All hardware works with Windows because hardware makers want to make money. So they make sure that their hardware works with the one operating system that has enjoyed virtual monopoly status since the beginning by releasing drivers that allow their hardware to work with Windows. If they don't, then ...

Yeah, I move large video files back and forth from Mint to my data drives all the time, so every bit of performance helps. :)
