Re: Why would I want to use LMDE vs Current LM Cinnamon?
Preface by saying after testing Mint 20 beta that it's going to be a terrific release and strengthens my belief that Cinnamon DE has a bright future. To put it simply, I worry less about Debian base than Ubuntu base. There are a number of reasons for that, such as uploads breaking things on the Ubun...

Re: LM 20 Ulyana - beta, post here
It should run at least as fast as Mint 19. You can turn off effects for a little more speed.carum carvi wrote: ⤴Sat Jun 13, 2020 3:11 am How does it perform on slower, older computers? I have a 2008 computer, will LM20 run with similar ( or acceptable) speed as on LM19 ?

Re: LM 20 Ulyana - beta, post here
I've just installed the shiny new LM 20 beta on my daily driver machine as the only OS. It's quick, and the UI is far more amenable to being used with HiDPI without the need to double-scale. In short, it's the bee's knees. Agreed. I've never been more impressed with Cinnamon. Much improvement over ...

Re: Mint 20 Mate Beta Issues, Suggestions
I'm not impressed with Mint Xfce 20 either. It looks ugly with huge icons on the right side of the panel and tiny ones on the left, but my primary disappointment is that it uses 500 mb of ram at boot compared to Cinnamon which is only 700 mb of ram at boot. I see no reason to use Xfce at this point ...

Just out of curiosity, are you getting the i915 firmware missing message during boot? You might check out the info at these 2 links: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/556946/possible-missing-firmware-lib-firmware-i915-for-module-i915 https://askubuntu.com/questions/832524/possible-missing-frm...

Re: LMDE 3 to reach EOL (End-Of-Life) on July 1st
Debian 9 LTS support:
Debian 9 “Stretch"
2020 to June 2022
https://wiki.debian.org/LTS
So unless Mint is actually blocking security updates LMDE3 has 2 more years of Debian LTS support doesn't it?

Re: Ideas on Budget Laptops...
I like to buy old Chromebooks with intel cpu's. I bought an Acer C740 Chromebook for $50 on Ebay, it's in excellent shape. I flashed the bios and will be replacing the ssd with a larger one. The problem with newer machines is non-removable ssd's and they all have fixed ram, so I only want 4gb ram or...

Re: Can I still use 17.3?
IMO the OP would be much happier running Debian Stable. I sympathize with his lack of enthusiasm for Timeshift. I've never had a Debian Stable system break on me that I didn't break myself by doing something I shouldn't have. LMDE is a good compromise if you want a few newer apps and updates. Eventu...

Re: Linux laptop
FYI. Linux can be installed on most Chromebooks, but it can be a bear to do so compared to just buying a used Windows machine and installing Linux.

So far so good. It did ask me to download language packs on first boot for some reason. Other than that nothing out of the ordinary.

Re: Star Trek: Picard... who here is planning on watching it?
I think the issue with the "modern" re-incarnations of Trek & Dr who is a reflection on today's "instant" society.Attention spans a re so short that people cannot hold an idea for a few minutes, let alone a whole week between episodes. (Remember that?) Early Dr Who was a ser...

Re: Star Trek: Picard... who here is planning on watching it?
Picard is very good so far. I'm interested to see where they are taking it.
Discovery was a mess that got worse as it went along. Maudlin, over-acting throughout. The protagonist seemed to cry in almost every episode in the 2nd season. The story is just bad.

Re: Pinebook pro
I've heard good things and read a nice review posted on reddit not long ago. These are supposed to be very solidly built. Debian should run on it? Some Linux apps are touchy with Arm, but I know some people with Arm Chromebooks have used Linux on them. Will be interested in your review of the laptop.

Re: In my Offline Time, I use a Public Library's Digital media
The price of many ebooks has skyrocketed, often costing more than the print versions. I rarely buy ebooks anymore. You are right that libraries make it easy to get ebook loans and that can save lots of money.

Re: So, "Microsoft" called me ...
No, we're not. This seems to be pretty much a US American phenomenon; over here in Europe, political calls and especially robocalls are rare. You don't know how lucky you are. On a good day I might get 3-5, but some days 7-8 in a day. I strongly suspect everyone who has our phone numbers here in th...
