kde 3.5 for mint 6

Postby jozien » Sat Apr 25, 2009 9:55 pm

I have installed mint 6 on my ThinkPad T60 and I think it is great,
everything is working fine including wireless but I prefer kde 3.5.
I know kde 4 is available for mint 6 but I don't think it's ready for prime time.
Is there a how-to to install kde 3.5 on mint 6?
Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

That is not possible
I won't go into details but the difference between KDE4 and 3.5 is too big

Thanks for the reply

Is there an iso available for an earlier version of mint that has kde 3.5?

Mint 5 in KDE is very stable. I'm thinking of going back to it myself.

I tried to download mint 5 kde but your server is so slow.
Only get 35KB /sec, it will take 19 hours to download.
There is a dvd of mint 5 kde available for $10.00, I may go that route.

Thanks again

35KB /sec

Eh?
At least ten times that is what you should get - depends of course on where you are and which server you select

I tried another server and was getting 300KB-1000KB and downloaded mint 5 kde in 45 mins.
Installed and am using it now. It is working fine.

Thanks again,

I too have Linux Mint 6 ... I installed it on my laptop earlier this week. I know there are some
major differences between KDE 4.x and 3.5.x, but why exactly is it not possible to be able
to install 3.5.x on LM6? GNOME is OK, but looks too simplistic and dated for my liking.

I agree that KDE 4.x is not quite ready for prime-time, and not totally stable yet, but I prefer
the much more stable and mature 3.5.x series. I'd rather not take a step back in my choice
of Linux distro to be able to install a better and more reliable version of KDE.

If other Linux distros can offer the choice between KDE 4.x and 3.5.x ... why can't Mint?

Thanks for that, the instructions at this location listed on that thread appear to be what I've
been looking for. Despite a hiccup with it not liking the GPG key, I've now got a Terminal
window open on my laptop next to me, with a KDE 3.5.x installation in progress.

Here's hoping the installation is completed successfully . . .

Let us know how it works out DJGM...

I have only tried 3.5 once but wasn't really impressed with the old interface. It would be interesting to try it out (with these instructions) to see if it works better than the distro I had tried before. I may try it on my Mint 7 RC1 before switching to final once released. That way if it is messed up during installation I can just start fresh.

BTW...what version are you trying this on, Mint 6?

KDE 3.5.10 was successfully installed, it's now up and running quite smoothly. The only issue
(albeit a relatively minor one) is that I have to start up my wireless connection manually,
but that's just a few quick clicks away, so it's a very trivial issue for me.

I'm running LM6, on a 6½ yr old Dell Latitude C610, with a 1.2GHZ PIII and 512MB RAM.
