URGENT heads up and help needed

Postby anthony2010 » Fri May 15, 2009 10:00 am

I went to our software portal and tried to install 'Formula' for kde.

It stripped out my system somehow, mint install, synaptic, games, all stripped out. Now, after a reboot, the system only goes to a command prompt. Maybe someone needs to look at this package and possibly remove it.

Now, I have some very important emails in my Thunderbird, how can I retreive them from the position of a command prompt. I realise a new install is now needed, but I really need these mails. Can anyone help at all? Please?

Hi
At the command line

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get --purge remove <package>
where package is formula (should it be
kformula?)

Then

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install kde

Then

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install kdm

Then

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install-synaptic

Your home directory should be intact so if you use synaptic to install
thunderbird and everything else all should be OK

Did you get any warnings that installing this package would remove the others? - Nick

Hi Nick

Thanks for the abc reply, thats how I need it. Oh and the destructive package was KFormula. Just for the record.

Now, I have thunderbird back but Dolphin is not there nor the Konsole. So whikst I can see the emails, I cant do anything with them. Oh and no keyboard it seems!

Is there anything I can do from here on?

Thanks for getting me this far though :)

Hi
Mistake it should read

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install synaptic

Now if you go to synaptic

Code: Select all

sudo synaptic
and search for dolphin and the konsole
you should be able to see and install them.

Keyboard, maybe you lost xorg
try

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg

then reboot if no keyboard try;

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and only answer questions about keyboard

maybe somebody can come up with the complete package list for
KDE 4 , i am using KDE 3

PS you have just learned how to install Debian from a business card CD :)

Nick, I am beyond grateful!

You should teach this stuff!

I will remember how that was done. Next I plan learning how to install Tarballs. I have libmtp3.5 here and want to install that.

Excellent teaching and thankyou.
