eject and unmount

Postby Dwood » Sun Oct 12, 2008 3:47 pm

I have an iriver mp3 player that works as a mass storage device, when plugged in, it appears both on the desktop and in the 'places' menu on the toolbar.

When I want to remove the usb drive, I go to the places menu, right click and select 'unmount'. This makes sense.

However if I right click on the icon on the desktop I have an option for 'eject'. This also makes sense but why the difference, is there any difference between 'eject' and 'unmount'?

Also, I need to do this in both locations for the drive to disappear.
If I only 'eject' or 'unmount' from one place the icon remains with an option to 'mount' it even when it has been physically removed from the computer.
Is this a bug?!
Thought I would post here for any answers, didn't want to be the first to post in the bugs thread !

This is in the grayzone between what you want and bugs
You only have to use one of the options, but it is imperative to use either before disconnecting
A CD/DVD disc is also a removable media and is treated similarly
If you reboot it will disappear after only one of these measures
Don't fix it if it ain't broken, don't break it if you can't fix it
