[SOLVED] List of packages installed by default

Post by SaberClassMor »

Where do I find which packages are installed as standard for a particular version of Mint?

If a user installs an ISO of Linux Mint, they can use various tools - apt, inxi - and Desktop applications - Gnome Terminal, Firefox, all the Cinnamon Settings, etc. Is there a list of all of these that are part of a fresh Mint install, assuming they didn't mess with recommended settings?

I am not actually a dev and don't want to develop Mint, but this seems like the right place to ask this question. I've tried looking around, but everything just links me back to the full repository, or to general release notes.

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -l

or

Code: Select all

apt list
will give you everything, but not very readable & everything is everything!!

Anything that is more readable don't tend to list everything, in my experience.
For example..
Backup Tool will give you a good list of what applications you have added.
Distrowatch give a very readable list of most of the major applications, but not all..

Actually, in the "Full Package List" on distrowatch, they have 2159 packages listed for Una (20.3), which I think is probably a complete list except they are including all three desktops, Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce, in one list.

To see what is currently installed through apt on your system, try:

Code: Select all

apt list --installed
And if you want a count of the number of packages there, you can do this:

Code: Select all

apt list --installed|wc -l
That just pipes the output to "wordcount", with the -l option telling it to count lines rather than words.

But this won't include things not installed through apt, such as flatpaks, snaps, etc. And of course it includes not only the initial default install, but everything you have added since. I'm not sure how to tell exactly what installed initially, but I bet that info is in the logs somewhere.

To look at the installation log for what was installed from the iso last time you freshly installed mint -

Package list

Code: Select all

zcat /var/log/installer/initial-status.gz | sed -n 's/^Package: //p' | sort -u
Package detail

Code: Select all

zcat /var/log/installer/initial-status.gz

Another way - download an iso of interest, right click to mount it and then navigate to and view it's ./casper/filesystem.manifest and ./casper/filesystem.manifest-remove files. (The later are packages used during installation, but removed from the final installation)

That manifests directory is exactly what I'm looking for, thank you!

Thanks also for ISO suggestion, and to RIH and acerimusdux too - I can see these all being great solutions in other usecases (I wanted the list prior to install). Keeping this thread bookmarked for reference :D
