The description and screenshots (currently taken from the community website) are inadequate. (Only about 1% packages have screenshots). My idea is would it be possible for the software manager to fetch them from a wiki(running mediawiki)? This would also solve the wishes of many users(including me ) wanting a linux mint wiki. I know that we had one earlier and that it was vandalized, but we can workout a permissions scheme(so people don't vandalize content displayed by the software manager right to the desktop). It would also make contributing screenshots easy(I couldn't find a single way to do it.) We could cascade protect the images/description actually displayed and limit access to admins for these sections while keeping the rest of the tutorial/information section editable.
The main feature that I think is possible is the software manager integration ofcourse. Any thoughts?
PS: Don't get me wrong but the community site isn't that great at the moment and the bug tracking at github is filled with people asking Linux MInt questions rather than ones about the site.

Re: Wiki + Software manager
A temporary test wiki has been set up at http://linuxmint.wikinet.org/wiki/Main_Page
You can help. First task would be to transfer stuff from https://sites.google.com/site/mintwiki/

Re: Wiki + Software manager
Here's an earlier attempt at a mintwiki:
https://sites.google.com/site/mintwiki/
The biggest concentration of application screenshots is:
http://screenshots.debian.net/
This is where debian and ubuntu links from in their package managers. Many packages has entries on wikipedia with screenshots. If it's in wikipedia it's under an open licence and maybe you could just grab a couple from there?
There are earlier ideas about screenshots (a couple by me ) here:
