I want to help, and get some help

Post by lonesword »

Hi,

I didn't see a mailing list for linux mint so I thought I'd ask here. I'm a computer science student and I'm looking for a final year project for my engineering course for a team of two. I love linux mint and I thought it would be great if I could help the OS in the process.

We'll be having about 3 months to work on it. But we have to submit a project abstract first and get it approved soon. So bug fixes and "general improvement" won't make it through the screening sadly. If there are any specific (fairly complicated) features that we can work on, we'd be happy to know about them. There are a lot of issues and feature requests here[1] and in the other repositories but I thought it would be better to ask for suggestions.

And as for me, I completed a google summer of code project this year with SMC as the mentoring organization. I worked on creating a stemmer for a transliteration software for Indian languages. You can know more about me in my blog[2]. I'm comfortable with python but I do not have any prior experience in Qt or GTK though.

Thank you

For this you'll have to talk to the developers. They use IRC and GitHub as their collaboration spaces. I'd recommend you try and catch them on IRC. From Linux Mint that is easy, just open HexChat from your menu and you'll join the Linux Mint IRC channels automatically. Once there type /join #linuxmint-dev to join the developer channel (from another OS, join #linuxmint-dev on irc.spotchat.org with your preferred IRC client). Depending on your timezone, time of day, and what they are busy with you might not get an immediate response. Try few hours later if you get no response.

All Linux Mint projects on GitHub are found here: https://github.com/linuxmint. If you're familiar with GitHub, you'll know how to spot who the active developers are so you may recognize them on IRC

Thanks, I did not know the name of the IRC channel. Will definitely try to spot someone there. Thanks a lot again. Meanwhile, if anybody do have some ideas/suggestions please mention it here.
