Does this announcement mean that we (normal users) can now upgrade from Mint 17 Cinnamon to 17.1? If so, how do we do it and if not, is this thread where I should keep watch for an announcement and instructions? I'm confused (new to Mint with 17) and just want to make sure I don't miss the update when it's ready. :)

Yes, run the update manager. It should already told you that an update for itself is there. Once you updaye the update manager, an option to updaye to 17.1 will be available in the menu

In the Edit menu!?!?

Well, I never would have seen that if you hadn't told me!

Thanks,

Edit to ask another question. There are some Level 4 and level 5 updates listed. Should I or shouldn't I install those before doing the upgrade to 17.1?
Also: Is the upgrade going to download another whole system image? Are there any official instructions posted somewhere?

I, personally did not install 4,5 level updates before updating.
Also I do not think it download the image. I think it gets all the libraries and things and puts it where needed.
Than reboots the system.
My pc took like 20+min to be done.

Thanks for the tip. By the way: I see that the new version of Mintupdate no longer shows this option, lol...

I posted a thread elsewhere trying to solve why after the upgrade to 17.1, I only have 14 emblems available when there are supposed to be about either 27 or 37, according to screenshots I've seen. I realized I should probably have asked in this thread.

When I go to the Update Manager and hit refresh, this is what appears:

Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/upubuntu-com/p ... ce/Sources 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/upubuntu-com/p ... 4/Packages 404 Not Found
Failed to fetch http://ppa.launchpad.net/upubuntu-com/p ... 6/Packages 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Does this mean that I am unable to upgrade Mint Cinnamon 17 to 17.1 or ???

Go into Software Sources and disable that PPA. Then refresh the Mint Update Manager.

Thanks for the response re: error messages when I attempted to check for updates to Mint 17.1 I disabled the offending PPA's and refreshed the update manager.
The error messages are now gone, but there is no update to Mint 17.1 listed. Do I need to add any new sources manually now?

The update to 17.1 for cinnamon and mate is an option within the update manager, not an update that appears with the usually listed updates.. For instructions see here http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2725

I don't see the Upgrade to 17.1 option under the Edit Menu like everyone says, and I'm using 4.7.9 of Mint Update, and I am using main repos from http://packages.linuxmint.com, updated the repos list many times but nothing still. Is it even in there in that repo, cuz if it is, why am I not seeing it?

You may want to try using an alternative mirror for the mint repos, as noted here http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=2737 the servers have been struggling with traffic volumes recently and causing connection problems for some people.

If that doesn't solve it then may I suggest starting a new thread so that those members with the relevant knowledge can ask more detailed questions and try to offer specific advice.

Hope this helps

Pretty happy with the new version. Upgraded via update manager. Did same for 3.16 kernel. Nothing broke that I can tel but all seems faster and smoother. I like the little tweeks to various stuff. Not a scientific analysis but I like it and think the upgrade is worth it on a reasonably modern MB+CPU. Thanks!
