Exactly as in the article described. At first you import the key, than you list the keys with displaying the fingerprint and compare the resulting fingerprint with the fingerprint given at the page. I just verified, that it works as described.

Even shorter: Importing with the recv-key option, verifying with the list-keys and with-fingerprint options.

There will be a way to update to 18 from the Update Manager, but it hasn't been released yet. Probably be a couple of weeks from what I hear, but who knows?

Another matter is: is it wise to upgrade in-place from 17.x to 18 at all ("überhaupt")?

Personally, I doubt it. The leap from the Ubuntu 14.04 codebase to the Ubuntu 16.04 codebase is huge. Too much so, I think. I advise to do a clean installation of 18.
