Just use the SHA's? I've never had an issue using these.

Stupid question most likely but this is for people running regular Linux Mint and not LMDE correct?

The title says it all: Linux Mint 18; that is not LMDE 2.

Been using it for the last couple of days on my Macbook Air and works great so far.

Are there instructions anywhere to upgrade from 17.3 to 18? I appreciate your help

Those instructions are here. I strongly recommend to use a fresh installation instead. At best after having made a complete backup of the existing system, at least after backing up all user data.
