The Linux Mint Software Portal

Post by clem »

Hi,

If you're running Cassandra BETA012 you've got mintInstall preinstalled and you can install mint files by simply double-clicking on them.

What's missing is a portal for us to put these mint files, the Linux Mint Software Portal:

http://www.linuxmint.com/software/

There's only 2 items in there at the moment and the graphical design is really bad but the portal is functional and you can start using it.

We'll add extra features to it as we go along (screenshots, user comments, rating system..etc) and give it a nice look and feel too.

Note: This is similar to PCBSD's Pbidir or Linspire Click'n'Run. Novell is also building its own solution (don't know if they have a name for it yet).

Beware: These mint files are built for Cassandra and mintInstall is still in BETA. This is not recommended for Bianca users.

Hello Clem,
I have MintInstall working. I can access the portal and am downloading Google Earth, but the download is very. very slow.
The Progress Bar tells me that I am downloading, but it is stuck(?) at 50%.

EDIT The progress and installation window (Terminal style) is too large and hidden at the bottom. (Excessive vertical size in my 1024x768 resolution on 17" screen)
The download was not completed.

greetings

EDIT Wed. May 16.
Downloaded Google Earth . No problem now with Mintinstall.

It's a bug in mintinstall... the download process freezes the interface.. we'll have it fixed for stable.

I'd like to see in mintInstall:

- Exaile
- Pidgin (or is it in Cassandra by default?)

Hello Clem,
I downloaded Opera and Exaile! Good work! Listening to Symphony music. :D
I even got an upgrade for Opera.
Still, I think MintInstall acts strangely, but it worked this time for me.
Thanks, Clem

PS both packages were added to the MintMenu.

mintInstall was upgraded to version 1.8 (new layout, better download reporting, better backup/restore of your APT sources).

Next version of mintInstall (1.9) is going to come with 3 command line utilities:

- mint-decompress --> decompresses a mint file into a directory
- mint-compress --> compresses a directory into a mint file
- mint-make --> asks a few question and produces a directory with all the right files inside :)

This is going to make it very easy for people to create and edit mint files.
