Upgrading.... it never ceases to be a controversial issue, which makes it also often rather amusing. There's nothing like a fiery controversy to sharpen the mind and make you feel alive. Well, maybe a big mug of strong hot coffee comes near.

My position is clear: for upgrades that entail a change of the entire Ubuntu code base, like the upgrade from Mint 19.x (Ubuntu 18.04) to Mint 20 (Ubuntu 20.04), I advise a clean upgrade. Which means a fresh installation. Regardless of what any potentially differing official recommendation might be.

I base my advice on my personal experience of 14 years of (nearly) 100 % Ubuntu and Mint use on the desktop. Everybody is of course entirely free to do as they please with my advice. Thank God it's a free world: we can say what we think and we can do our upgrades the way we prefer it.

Wouldn't it be awesome if we could get Mint on a rolling release? :p

Not so much, no.... A fixed release is inherently much more stable and reliable than a rolling release.

I'm not sure how I feel about this warpy thing. I generally do not like my computers communicating with other computers on any network unless I explicitly tell them to.

Warpinator does nothing unless you do something with it.

I hope it can be disabled easily.

I'm also hoping I can still use ifupdown. I am not a huge fan of netplan.

Netplan in Linux Mint is configured to let NetworkManager do the work so it's essentially disabled.

I'm hoping to put this on a new Ryzen 5 4500U laptop. But as i understand things, the 4000 series (Zen2 "Renoir") requires a later kernel version than 5.4. Will later kernels be available / supported soon, or will we need to update manually?

Another more general question- what are the advantages of Ubuntu 20 over 18? That is, how does being based on Ubuntu 20 make Mint 20 better?

Gents have run run the update manager as suggested above to upgrade from the beta version of Linux Mint 20 “Ulyana” Cinnamon Edition however it just comes back with system up to date. would appreciate any suggestions and thanks in advance

I'm in the process of upgrading from Mint 19.3 on my home computers. The first update (as a fresh install over 19.3) went well, but then it was the simplest to upgrade since there was virtually no customization with that computer. Furthermore, I have the home directory on a separate partition so all I had to do was modify the "fstab" file to reconnect it to the root partition.

Question concerning Warpinator compared to Samba. Has anyone posted a comparison of the two?

One hopes that newer releases would be better... I mean, the general goal is to improve. But that's a little esotheric. A very simple and concrete answer: it makes it compatible with more up-to-date software.

Any ETA on how to upgrade from 19.3 to 20 ? There is a specific bug related to DisplayLink docking stations that is addressed in Ubuntu 20.04 and which I couldn't resolved in 19.3 (and I hope will be addressed in LM).

Yes, The Official 20 release was on June 27. And also there was a Monthly News post on that day. It's in the blog, and the post is on this forum right beside this thread.

But it says something like "we will spend the next 2 weeks focusing on the upgrade path and (some other thing)".

So today is about 1 week. And two weeks takes us up to July 10 or 11. So, ETA, is around a week from now.

I do not trust any third party gratuitously advertising their web site to generate web traffic, or a forum user posting an upgrade tutorial. The official Linux Mint Team is the only trusted source. Always, read the Official Announcement and Release Notice before upgrading to Linux Mint 20.

Well, my position remains the same: an in-place upgrade is something I only recommend within a Mint series (e.g. the 19 series). For upgrading from one series (e.g. the 19) to another (e.g. the 20) I recommend a clean installation.

Of course I respect and appreciate the considerable amount of effort that the devs have put into making the upgrade from 19.x to 20 as painless as possible. But still I think the "jump" in the underlying codebase is so big, that a clean installation of 20 is technically the best solution.

If you normally did not use Timeshift before, then using it during the upgrade would use maybe 6GB for the snapshot. You can get rid of that, and/or probably should at least give a newly updated snapshot.
