Re: Update your computer!
I don't understand why anybody wouldn't keep their computer updated. I wonder if they also keep their doors unlocked at night.

Same here, especially since Linux makes it so quick and easy and allows you to choose when to update. If using Timeshift, it's also easy to recover if an update goes south (which I haven't encountered yet).

I decided to read it before reacting, and as I update regularly - thanks Clem for providing a bit of insight.AlithinosMakethonas wrote: ⤴Sat Feb 20, 2021 11:18 am Don't scare people like that! I thought that some new serial issue or linux virus appeared!

Sometimes it takes a scare to get people to do what they should have been doing all along.AlithinosMakethonas wrote: ⤴Sat Feb 20, 2021 11:18 am Don't scare people like that! I thought that some new serial issue or linux virus appeared!

Re: Update your computer!
Well, I upgraded my Windows 10 to Linux Mint XFCE, does that count?
Re: Update your computer!
I couldn't agree more. At least I know within the Linux Mint world ( unlike windows) an update won't nuke any data I have an any storage drives that I could possibly " link" a folder library too . xD

Just transcribing what I posted on the blog:
"February 21, 2021 at 2:46 am
The title:
“Update your computer!”
It conveys a meaning different from that desired.
I believe that:
“Update your system!”
It would be better."

Today's treat for updating Mint 20/20.1 is Thunderbird 78 at last
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.
Re: Update your computer!
Some people subscribe to the "If it ain't broke then don't fix it" principle.
Unfortunately with something as complicated as software it's often difficult to know if it's broken. It may appear to be working completely fine on the surface and yet still harbour a massive security flaw that is just sitting there waiting for someone to discover and take advantage of.
That's why I subscribe to the preventative maintenance principle. If there are things that I can do to keep things running smoothly then I do them: I get my car serviced every six months, I trim the trees so their leaves won't clog up my guttering, I install software updates.

Re: Update your computer!
Strictly speaking: no, no need to upgrade to Mint 20.x in order to get Thunderbird through Update Manager. Works on my LM 18.1 and 19.3. Has worked since 78.3 or 78.4 here. [1]antikythera wrote: ⤴Tue Feb 23, 2021 2:41 pmToday's treat for updating Mint 20/20.1 is Thunderbird 78 at last
But I guess permitting Update Manager to do its job, i.e. installing available updates, on still supported LM releases like e.g. 18.1 and 19.3 should be covered by Clem's blog post as well.

I know there's been alternate methods available for some time but 78 being in the focal repository at last is indeed a bonus

Re: Update your computer!
Following Clem's advice, today this computer, where I am typing now, has received a 5.4.0 kernel update plus some more updates.
Looking at the age, which most of the machines around here have reached (10+), I start wondering whether "Update your computer!" should not be applied to my hardware in the first place.

Re: Update your computer!
I agree entirely with that sentiment. There is going to come a point when they are so painfully slow it will be necessary regardless of how concerned about throwing away 'perfectly good' hardware the owner is. It's false economy of time and electricity to sit in front of an older machine waiting for it to process what a modern one can in a fraction of the time.
Additionally, kernel module developers do not support hardware forever either.
The argument about not being able to afford something newer is easily negated by not buying as much beer or whatever else they use disposable income on for a few months. It's called saving up

I will sometimes hold back on a kernel or gpu update till the weekend so I'm not dealing with a possible issue in the middle of a work-week.

Re: Update your computer!
That's what timeshift is for, it takes minutes not hours to rollback from problem updates even via live media using the last known good snapshot if you cannot boot to a working desktop environment from your installation. So take one before updating and you are all set.shockedquartz wrote: ⤴Thu Feb 25, 2021 6:22 pm so I'm not dealing with a possible issue in the middle of a work-week.

Re: Update your computer!
In my opinion best way to deal update situation is allow people to make they own choises and use default settings for people who don't understand what they are doing. Reason for this is that no-one does know other preoples situations and why they are doing someting. People may have reasons why they do something in different ways.
While I do agree that it's not wise to use end of life products or not to update, the way some people do. Still it's not my choise to make it. Example if I use some product someway, that doesn't mean that my perspective to look situation does fit for everyone. That's why giving people to make they own choises is better. One of the problem what happened in Microsoft Windows, was that they started to force they own viewpoint to others as "I know better that my customers". While it can be true in many cases, it's not neccessary true for every case, because people can use stuff very different ways. Every peoples situation isn't neccessary same.
So in my opinion while updating is wise thing to do. It should not be forced, but as been choise.

Re: Update your computer!
With windows, it was always "heck, I need to update the system..." With Linux, I can't wait to update. Sometimes I sit there watching the screen, waiting for a notification from the updater. (Not really, but I don't hesitate to keep Linux up to date.)
