I'm still pretty new to linux as a whole and so this is might just be a simple fix more than a bug, but whenever I run an update or install something I get this message

You need to install the public keys for the repository you are using. Go back to where you got the instructions on how to make apt-get install packages from another repository and read a little further. You'll see something about installing the "keys".

Not sure if these are bugs or just me being stupid!

1. In Firefox the option to save passwords does not popup when I type one in. The option appears to be enabled but doesn't work.
2. I have two monitors connected to my PC - in Mint 7 I could choose which monitor had the menu bar on it.In Mint 8 it appears to be stuck to the right hand one - inevitably I want it on the left hand one.

I have Mint 8 RC installed on my 5 year old Dell Latitude laptop. The only thing I'm having a problem with right now is Samba, though I'm not sure that isn't an issue between the wireless laptop and the wired LAN, as both of the Windows boxes and my Linux desktop machine are all on wired ethernet. I had a problem with my HUAWEI E 169 usb modem HSDPA. No connection at all because the modem was not recognized.
This bug was in default Helena linux kernel. I downloaded, in Ubuntu, the correct linux kernel:
linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic_2.6.31-14.48lp451337apw1_i386.deb
downloaded from
http://people.canonical.com/~apw/lp4513 ... 1_i386.deb

Then i installed this linux kernel with gdebi. Rebooted the system and the HUAWEI connection key run correctly.

After installing the nvidia driver I could not make my resolution permanent without merging it with xorg.conf.
So I used copy/paste from Gloria to fill it in, and hey, it works.

Looks like this file at least is needed on my computer.

X should be able to run without an xorg.conf file. Hardware and settings are now detected and configured automatically. However, if you wish to force some setting you can have it in the xorg.conf file and it will use those settings in preference to the automatic settings.Touchpad and synaptics (touchpad driver, not the package manager) settings are now handled by HAL.

I seem to be having problems viewing all of my files in Nautilus. I created a quick screencast which you can access at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1113957/Nautilus_Problem.ogv (my public Dropbox directory)

You can see that the photos are viewable in Terminal but Nautilus just hangs. If I restart they will show again but if I move files around it will hang again.

Any thoughts?

Hi, I wanted to install Mint8 on my netbook using Daemon Tools.
But it does not work.
On Autorun wubi says No CD detected, cannot run CD Menu.

Mint4win is not working in this RC version AFAIK. You will have to wait for a later RC or the Final release... or install to HD

Installed Firestarter, just to try to hit something I don't already use. The new installer with more info was excellent concept and works well.

However, whatever I got from installing Firestarter from Mintinstall doesn't start.

Could start from terminal which did validate current package.

No prompt from menu selection for root control of program. After started from terminal, ran fine.

I am being prompted for the keyring for every log into the wireless lan.

Can't that be something tied to the LAN settings or is it just too early a release...

minor topics...

1) Korean fonts are not installed. I could see the package is already selected in aptitude, but not installed.
and I recommend using ttf-unfont-core, instead of ttf-unfont-extra.
fonts in ttf-unfont-core fit well to the new installation screen

2) As a default setting, antialiasing of Korean fonts are disable, and I've heard tons of guys complaining about this.
Is it possible to change this setting? the settings are stored in this file: /etc/fonts/conf.avail/29-language-selector-ko-kr.conf .
just emptying(or commenting out) this file is okay, because it is proved that deleting it, in fact, solves some bugs.

and if i do 'ps ax |grep firefox' it works just fine (note no space after pipe)

it seems it's a problem with locale. i think i have deafult locale set, language is english, i only selected keyboard layout as Slovenian and CET timezone.

Seems like a bug though.

I have located the problem. Besides my primary keyboard layout, which is Slovenian, and which i selected during installation, another one was set as default, Ireland. Actually, all the keys were the same except two, which is how i found out about it. After i removed the 'Ireland' layout, all works flawlessly.

The question is, why did my installation had Irelad layout as default, and disregarded my custom setting?

HAL is no longer used in Ubuntu 9.10 instead it's "DeviceKit-power", "DeviceKit-disks" and "udev". I don't know if HAL still controls I/O devices like mice
But still already in Gloria anything regarding mouse etc. in xorg.conf is ignored
xorgl.conf will disappear in the long run because in simple terms X will move into the kernel, so that subsystem will be different

In my continuing efforts to get my ZTE modem working I decided to carry out the procedure mentioned in this post here:

Which involves changing a kernel. Now it didin't work as far as the modem is concerned, but that is not the bug I am reporting here. The one I am reporting is much more serious. The kernel change rewrites the grub.cfg file, but it did so in a manner that, if I had not manually edited it, would have rendered the entire PC unbootable. The major error that occurred was that in every entry the 'Set Root =' line was wrong. For example for Mint 8 the lines read like this:

(I have omitted lines in between to make the error clearer to see - I hope you can see it!)

Now bear in mind that this file has been created with 'read only' privileges - even for root, and comes with dire warnings about editing it by hand.

Now I admit I know next to nothing about grub2, but I am pretty sure that the above line would not have worked had I not changed the privileges on the file, ignored the warnings, and edited it myself. I do know however that upgrading the kernel resets the read only privileges so it looks like I am going to have to do this every time a kernel upgrade comes out. Maybe I am unlucky, but if it is not just me, then you are going to have howls of protest every time you bring out a new kernel if you leave grub2 as it is.

There were other errors in the config file as well - duplications of the Windows entry, misidentification of Sidux, and failure to identify Mandriva at all (it just stuck in the kernel number, no title). Now none of these would have prevented it from booting but would have been a slight annoyance.

If grub2 is to have a uneditable config file then this raises a couple of issues. The first is that the automatic configuration has to be correct. I have only used it twice and it has been wrong both times. The second is that if the config file is uneditable manually then you HAVE to provide another means to edit it (if there is one I haven't found it yet). Fail to do this and you have moved away from the ideals of Linux (ie that the user has control of his own computer) and closer ideal of Microsoft where only 'Big Brother' has control and you keep your hands off.

I don't find that acceptable really.

Right, after having had time to look around and read a bit more it seems my reaction to grub 2 may be largely based on misunderstanding.
Firstly there is a way to edit default settings in grub2 but it is not grub.cfg. It is in fact 'etc/default/grub' which is writable by root.
Secondly grub 2 counts partitions from 1 not 0 as in grub legacy, so in the example above sda7 is indeed (hd0.7) not (hd0,6) as I assumed. (it still counts drives from zero though just to make life easier for you!)
Thirdly if you want to add extra entries to grub.cfg manually you do this in etc/grub.d/custom_40 though this doesn't allow you to alter existing entries, I haven't found how to do that yet. Apparently you can copy and paste entries from an old menu.lst if you want to - but you will have to alter the partition numbers before you save the file (add 1).
So I guess I should have read a bit more before spouting off
Whether or not this makes life any easier is still open to question.

Mint 8RC1 installed fine, ran the 55 updates needed perfectly and everything was going fine until i installed Emerald (via synaptic) and enabled some compiz effects (desktop cube, cube rotate,etc let me know if you need a full list). Since then as soon as i try to do anything after log in (open any window, menu or any app at all) the system crashes and sends me back to the log in screen. I didn't try to enable anything i haven't already done on Mint 7 so i don't see my box as the problem. I've browsed through the logs from my Mint 7 partition and attached what may be the relevant part of syslog. Let me know if you want the full unedited log or any more logs/info. Simon.

Out of interest today I grabbed a cd of Ubuntu 9.10 to see if it was any different to Mint8 - it isn't. It wont work with my ZTE modem and the live cd wont even run on my wifes laptop (and yes I have checked the md5sum, in fact I checked the md5sum of the finalised cd). I haven't bothered installing it because I don't like Ubuntu much so it isn't worth it, but it explains a lot about why Mint 8 is nowhere near as good as Mint7 (yet). As they say, you can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear - no matter how much you tweak it.
