How to upgrade to Linux Mint 21

The upgrade to Mint 21 demands me to remove fossfreedom rhytmbox plugins. Without them I cannot get the lyrics.
Do you have any alternatives?

Furthermore I am rather surprised that I am forced to do a new timestamp. Since my last timestamp in July nearly nothing has changed which could not be redone by plain software update.

If there is really hardly any change in your system, the new snapshot will hardly take any space and any time. So what is the problem with it?

If that is flagged as orphaned packages, the mintupgrade tool can add them for keeping in the preferences. Unfortunately, there is no button, and you have to type the package names manually. Also, the preferences window covers the window where it shows the orphaned package names so that you can't even see them while typing, but you can take a screenshot from the first window. The GUI really needs some serious rework - it's pretty bad as is.

Otherwise, this looks like a support question and shouldn't be in this thread.

I did the upgrade as there is no way staying beyond 2025 with 20.3. It took me ages (at least 2 1/2 hours). In the end I had to reinstall Zoom and FreeTube.
In a way I missed adding the orphaned package adding fossfree rhythmbox. Manually I could install the fossfreedom ppa and after a restart, the Ilyrics plugin was there again in Rhythmbox.

I had a few errors while updating and for most of them the "Fix" button did nothing. I had to manually use apt to uninstall foreign packages and packages that were interrupting the upgrade. At some point, the tool told me I held broken packages, but synaptic couldn't find anything and apt dealt with them when used manually. Overall, it could have been smoother, but it was fine for me.

This was the less fluid upgrade experience I ever had in the past years.

Multiple error messages all the way by upgrading.

Software disappeared, including MegaSync. When trying to reinstall MegaSync, it throwed dependency errors.

I had to revert back.

I usually don't post, you can tell by the number of my posts. Last Friday the 5th, I tried the upgrade, it did downgrade many of my packages Kernel, KDENLIVE, Kicad, and many more. There was problems with things hanging and I felt like my system was done for. I used timeshift to go back, but still had some problems.

I have been upgrading and not doing a fresh install for many years. I had many 386 files on my system, and was using legacy boot.

So I bit the bullet and did a fresh install. I turned on UEFI in my bios. I created a separate UEFI, ROOT, and HOME partitions during the install. I used the LM Backup program to keep a list of installed programs before I started. I used Backup restore to get all my programs back. I had a copy of my old home, so I copied most of the configs back to my new home. Everything is working perfectly, I no longer have any 386 packages on my system. It seems to boot faster, maybe in my head but display looks better, and all my programs are now working perfectly. This did not take very long, not as long as the upgrade and the timeshift restore. I am trying to say do the fresh install, you will be glad you did, after you cuss a little.

Hello! For me it worked! Only some external programs (which needed python update) had to be reinstalled. Glad to have libreoffice updated by the distribution. My system is AMD Ryzen9 5950X, 64 GB RAM, SSD 100 GB Linux. Thanks Linux Mint Team!

I had LM 20.3 with LibreOffice updated to the latest via the downloadable .deb. mintupdate removed LO 7.3 then installed only the part of LO displaying the top entry in the menu. There was no Writer or anything else. I had to manually install Write, Calc, etc.

How do I perform the upgrade WITHOUT doing a system snapshot?

I don't use timeshift - running LM as a VM, so just create a backup of my .VDI file

I have an 'AMD' box and I have an 'intel' 'nvidia box' and I updated both of them a few weeks back following the upgrade tool on the 'mint documentation' and it could not have been easier. I am only a 1 year old NEWB on Linux and I am so happy. All my boxes were win 7 & 8.1, and I got a desktop through the VA which had Win 10(gag)... I hated it and the time to go to 11 was at hand, sooo I picked LM 18.2 I think and here I am. Even do things on the Terminal once I verify the proper commands.
Take your time follow the easy steps and in an hour ,maybe a little more, and you will be up and running. At the end it gave me the command to check in terminal what OS was loaded and it said LM 21 Vanessa. Don't rush, just chill, follow the steps and voila your up and running. Now 'search' what to do after loading LM 21 and tidy things up.
My laptop is the special box with 'intel' and 'nvidia' but it played along just fine, the only time it ever took extra steps was getting the Driver tool loaded when installing LM 18 originally and have had no further problems.
I loved the days of XP and websites like 'NONAGS' when you could play with your box, but Windows ruined it. History... now I found a big playground to play in. Time to donate to the cause. Thanks!
