The indicator applet "bug" has been inherited from Ubuntu. It seems that they've now packaged a lot of the applet icons into a single applet and put some spaces between them. There's also talk of Ubuntu annihilating Gnome's system tray within a few releases. I unfortunately have no clue how to get rid of the ugly spaces between the applet icons...

As for KDE and LXDE, I would wait until the KDE and LXDE versions of Mint 9 are released. So far, only the Gnome version is out...

There are people working on the KDE and LXDE, you could wait for them. Alternatively you can look 'em up in Synaptic and at the login choose which WM you use.

Suspend failures with ThinkPads

Hi, thanks for responding re suspend success with your portables. I confess I haven't done much homework on this. The beast called acpi is in the frame I think. A question did occur to me; do you use any hardware buttons on your machine to evoke the suspend (or is it hibernate???). The ThinkPads (R51 and Z60m) have buttons for use with the Fn key, but I have ignored them as being most likely to work only under Windows which I only boot into once a year to see if it still starts up. The machines both have 1G RAM, one has 3G swap and the other 1.5G.

Or do you just close the lid and let Gnome try to do its work with the power management functions? I see that as the ideal behaviour, sleep on lid closure as with a Mac lappie, and resume when lid opens. Guess this is in danger of becoming off topic, but would be interested in your response to above queries. Anyone connected with development welcome to reply as well Anyone who has had this work on a Mintie ThinkPad also feel free.

I installed Mint 9 stable yesterday. Found just one bug in Gnome panels. Nothing else so far...

dl and ran final release of m9 out of curiosity. all good.

but, i have noticed that once livecd is up and running, mint is alot more responsive in live cd mode then the installed mode?

like for example, the menu (main menu in the panel) opens up instantly on the livecd mode (like xp) were as there is like a 3 sec delay on the installed mode on first initialization but as snappy as livecd mode afterwards.

ff once it has been run in livecd mode opens up quicker and browses quicker again opposed to the installed mode?

i hope all this makes sense.....

I'm very thrilled to have upgraded to Mint 9.

The tutorial on "how to upgrade" was quite explicit, so that this 70 yr. young Newbie
had total success.
Only hardware not operational is the Epson Perfection 3170 Photo scanner.
It didn't work under Helena either: I read the "workaround" but it's too
difficult at this stage, so since I dual-boot with Win 7, I just go to that OS
to use the scanner.
Other option is to buy a Hp compatible scanner.

I boot to Mint 9, as my preferred OS.
Mint 9 will over take the top 3 OS when more Users like myself:
just follow the great tutorials & use Mint 9.

I can confirm this problem with my Inspiron 1150 as well. Gets to the loading dots, and is humming away happily, and then the screen shoots to black. Nothing after that.

Hi guy's , i'm a newbe here and i must say i'm impressed with Linux Mint 9, i downloaded the DVD install and it installed without a hitch, after installing my internet which was a breeze and my video card, this is truly a great operating system. Iv'e tried Ubuntu 10.04 but i didn't like it that much. All i can say is i'm sold on Linux Mint and will be recommending it to my friends. To all those involved i congratulate you and thank you for providing what i think is something special.

I believe this is due to a bug in Ubuntu 10.04 relating to the change to Kernel Mode Setting. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/572415.

You should be able to boot by pressing the F6 key as soon as you get the flash screen (showing the countdown timer) and then select safe graphics mode. If you proceed to install to the HDD you will need to load the proprietary drivers for your video card.

Select a moveable applet on your bottom panel, right click, "move" drag it round the screen and the invisible panels will become available. Add comments to this bug report so we know numbers of this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/575876

Absolutely no video after boot options on live 64bit DVD! Even in "compatibility mode". Nvidia geforce 9600 gt. And you can't search this forum post for "nvidia" because the term is "too common" so maybe someone has said something but if you can't search you can't find it. BOOOOOOO!

I love LM but this just plain sucks!

Mint was/is just the type of Linux Os i needed to make the transition from Windows. Linux is pretty strange to a long time windows user.
Anyhow...
Currently running on my Gateway LT2107H netbook
Intel Atom N450
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
2gigs DDR
250gig HD

Wifi out of the box, and video/audio
(interestingly my wifi dies after 5 minutes on a windows 7 install and never works after that, but works flawlessly under Mint)
Mint 9 seems to be slower for some reason compared to the Helena release. I had no problems with the Helena Release
I am however having issues on startup, being forced into low graphics mode, sometimes i can work around it sometimes not
Tried Mint 9 installed on my HD, it crashed bad, I am now running it on a persistent USB drive.

Ubuntu netbook release crashes bad on my system, not sure if there is a link there. I have a feeling my video card is not fully supported yet.

Any thoughts?

OK...
So I took a walk on the wild side and tried updating sources.list to isadora and lucid and doing an apt-get update/apt-get upgrade...
After about 45 minutes, and updating everything, there seemed to be a problem with usplash (and nvidia) so I couldn't start X normally.

Moral of the story, install from the liveCD. (or install clean and restore).. (The good news is that I learned how to burn a dvd from the command line )
The other good news is that after burning the dvd I was back in about 10 minutes... (What other operating system can claim that?)

Good thing: Isadora works on my old machine (AMD Duron). Before only LM 7 worked on it. LM8 and Ubuntu 9 didn't even boot (kernel panic).

Bad thing: Isadora seems to be unstable on this old machine. After booting from the live CD the following following scenarios happen at random:
1. Everything works ok after boot
2. The "Menu" applet does not load - a message box appears claiming that there was an error while loading
3. The styling is lost on the bottom panel (light gray color instead of dark gray) together with lack of any icons on the desktop (cannot install in this case, because cannot click the Install icon)
4. Only empty background appears and then there is an endless stream of small windows popping out. Each window is completely empty and the windows title says: "Error"
That is what I encountered so far. Hitting the "reset" button and booting again will switch me to another scenario. Ofthen it is the "ok" scenario where I can use the system normally. I also checked the md5 sums on the CD - all were ok.

Also there is no logo of Linux Mint during boot. Only 5 "loading" dots.
On the other hand my laptop shows the logo correctly and never had issues mentioned above. Curious.

Just stabbing in the dark here....but what could be happening is that your CD/DVD drive may be failing and not loading all the elements on the bad scenarios...the other could be Xserver issues.....try loading a liveCD from either another Distro or an older LM and see if you get the same issues. If you have or have access to an external CD/DVD drive, try that as well.....the fact that you have the loading dots and no real intro into the OS.....may be a clue that we have a problem with either disc or drive. I had an issue with a bad burn of LM8. I would get up to loading and no dots or loading and the dots but no OS. The disc was damaged......you could try, just for grins, doing another download and burn going even slower on your burn process to see if you can weed out any potential bugs......

Thanks. It could be a failing CD. If that is so, it must be failing only from time to time. Anyway failing or not - it did install successfully on the HDD and everything is working fine. (Execpt the logo which is missing even when booting from the HDD). I tried running LM9 on other machines and they all display the logo correctly, so its not a big deal.

since several days I try to get the Linux Mint Live DVD amd64 final release via torrent but it won't start.
My client is "Transmission" and the torrent file I got from HERE.
There is no Tracker response at all. What do I do wrong?
