if I need a small and lean OS I can always start with a raw ubuntu 12.04 (no desktop) and add lxde + software to it.
this is the best way for limited hard disk and memory, and for running only things you want. it's just a bit tricky to know what components and tools do you need. I know that I don't need synaptic or software center so I don't install them. but it may be nice to have a task manager, image viewer, unetbootin and other little things.

Just a few ideas....

remember crunchbang (#!) is based now on debian, currently squeeze (can get one with back-port repo activated). But testing (open public ISO) whezzy based one!

LTS is 5 years support to system (security patches ect.) and MAY update packages (mostly Unity stuff if any). Lubuntu will probably get 5 years of security patches, but state their not going to actually actively change any packages (other then ones getting from repos from Ubuntu) including LXDE base for more than 18 months!

For those wishing for a LMint Ubuntu edition) base LXDE , you may want to try Peppermint (Kendal was previous LMint LXDE maintainer) distro and add to what you need/want. More 'Cloud centric' but can create a perfectly good desktop. Perppermint2 comes in both 32 and 64 bit and includes most Mint tools (including 'Software manager' using LMint sources). Peppermint3 (in development) may or may not have Mint features.

If Like LMDE you may want to try 'Swift Linux' distro. It's now based on LMDE and uses their Upack system to update (I'm curentlly Upack4) and mints (debian) repos. Its 32 bit only and based on IceWM, I successfully added XFCE, LXDE, and/or Fluxbox, changing Login Manager to MDM and adding stuff using "Mint's 'software Manager' (like firefox thunderbird and any of the mint featured software (not on default Ubuntu).

From the Mint blog:
the LXDE and Fluxbox editions which were previously only available in 32-bit were discontinued.
