I did an update last night. Didn't think much of it as usually there is only one or two new packages, but last night there were quite a few, so perhaps I should have paid more attention. The price I am paying:
This morning I have no upper panel (which was full of launchers) and my lower panel was sparse. Anyone know where panel configuration data is kept? Can I recover, or do I have to rebuild the upper panel?

Which panel are you using; LXPanel or something else? If using LXPanel, there might be something relevant on the wiki: http://wiki.lxde.org/en/LXPanel
