mdm segfault on login (nvidia)

Post by mutabah »

Recently a computer I administer started failing to log in graphically (the screen goes black, flashes the nvidia logo, then goes back to the login screen).
Virtual terminal and ssh logins still work.

Dmesg contains the following each time a user attempts to log in.

Code: Select all

[168989.905803] mdm[1371]: segfault at 1 ip 000000000041f65e sp 00007ffcafe8e7a0 error 4 in mdm[400000+3e000]
The APT log doesn't show a lot of interest. There is an entry of somebody purging network-manager a two weeks before the error seemed to appear, and before that an upgrade on 4/October. I have run `apt-get upgrade` (and upgraded the graphics drivers from `nvidia-361` to `nvidia-375`).
This machine has a sibling that has nearly identical hardware which is still working (and did not get an upgrade around 4/Oct)

- Does anyone know what could be causing this
- And is there a way to run `mdm` in a debugger so I can get more useful information for a bug report.
