Can't change desktop environments

Post by Drmgiver »

So I installed Mint 18 XFCE with plans to install LXDE post install. Unfortunately when I get to the log in screen, there is no menu to change desktop environments. Where the gear should be, is completely blank. Can anyone help with this?

Hello Drmgiver and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums.
How did you install lxde? inorder to get it to work you may have to install lubuntu-desktop which will also change the mint themes. But lxde destop is not support by Mint per sae. Good Luck.

Many people have screwed their system up by attempting to install multiple DEs. There can be clashes.

Depending on the display manager in use, which provides the login screen, the cog to change DE may not be visible until you have entered the username and moved to the password entry screen.

I do not know if this is so in Mint with XFCE or LXDE but have a look to see when you get to the login screen.

I just searched for LXDE in software manager. I can try installing Lubuntu-Desktop, but I don't see how this will fix the log in manager. There is no option to switch to anything at all.

Lubuntu-desktop will pull another login manager and will show the Lubuntu splash screen.
But I would warn you it may break your xfce desktop. So I would think it through If you really want to try lxde I would
download a copy of Lubuntu and burn it to dvd or usb and run it live first to make sure it's what you want.

Good Luck

Possibly because there is nothing to switch to.
