OK, Sequentially: 18.1 Sarah Cinnamon ran fine; bought an SSD; installed as 1st booting device; turned on AHCI in BIOS; upgraded to Mint 18.3 Silvia Cinnamon, fresh install; installed various updates via manager as presented; moved video card to another slot so as to experience 16x, had been 8x, requires 'VGA switch card' in original PCIe slot, CrossFireX MB; installed more updates via manager, including kernels.

Along the way have been experiencing random freezing of entire computer, only a MB hard reset allows reboot. So far it seems to have only happened, while moving the Logitech blue-tooth mouse, usually while running firefox. Today disabled all Firefox add-ons except MySessions, turned on "Prevent accessibility services from accessing your browser" both measures, as per suggestions of others experiencing similar lockups. Not sure if it's stopped or not, as lockups are indeed random, sometimes minutes, sometimes multiple hours.

I have a multiboot system; I can boot 18.1 Sarah Cinnamon (on WD HDD, old install) with no lockups; same goes for Windows 7 SP1(on WD HDD, old install); same goes for Windows 7 SP1(on New SSD, New fresh install). Only Mint 18.3 Sylvia Cinnamon on new SSD (fresh install) locks up.

I would really like to fix this so I can delete old HDD installs and reclaim the HDD space.

Thanks in advance to anyone that has any helpful ideas, as it's much appreciated.

I think the problem may be the kernel. go to update manager and then veiw then kernels and install the 4.4.x branch. reboot and see if the freezes go away if they do there is a problem with your video driver under the 4.13 kernel stay with the 4.4 kernel until 4.15 is released they try that one. 4.13 had some problems with some cards.
good luck.

You might find it advantageous to ask a staff member to move your thread from the "Others" desktop environment sub-forum that you posted it in to the "Cinnamon" one, where (presumably) more people who use your chosen DE will see it.

Thanks much, that seems like a reasonable suggestion to initially follow. I'll let you know if it solves the problem.

Sidebar: My wife wrote a book report on Maine in school, she always wanted to visit, I thinks it might also be a good place to see. We heard about the possibility of living in a lighthouse, keeping it going, might be a retirement option. ;-) Love the snow, though I understand the Atlantic coastline is exceptionally rough up there, hmmm!

Thanks again!
