What happened when you logged in with one of the failsafe sessions ? Did you check disk space ? ~/.xsession-errors ? dmesg?

So I had this issue and fixed it for a little while but its back and the fix I used before no longer works
Even running as root I get a "not permitted" error when running the commands I used before such as $ >~/.xsession-errors
You can also delete the .xsession-errors file and create a symbolic link to /dev/null instead in order to get the same result:
$ rm .xsession-errors
$ ln -s /dev/null .xsession-errors
I found all this in link bellow hope it helps. If anyone can help with my issue please let me know
