How to connect to OpenVPN from Awesome window manager?

Post by nicen »

I've installed Mint 19 Cinnamon but prefer tiling window managers. Awesome's default config includes a basic panel; I've found a number of lua recipes that can extend it but I haven't yet found a networking widget.

My requirements:
- Connect to a configured OpenVPN network without using terminal
- Connect to a wifi network without using terminal

These behaviors were available from the Cinnamon panel networking widget. Is there a way to use the same widget in Awesome? Are there other widgets that can fulfil these needs?
