When I boot Mint I cannot see the logon screen but it is there because when I type my password and hit enter I can logon. On the other hand if I connect an external monitor the logon screen is shown on the monitor.
So far I tried setting nomodeset on GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in in /etc/default/grub but that resulted in a black screen with cursor (non blinking) after boot. Also secure boot is disabled on my PC (for other reasons). So secure boot enabled or disabled changed anything.
My system details:
RELEASE=19.1
CODENAME=tessa
EDITION="Cinnamon"
DESKTOP=Gnome
TOOLKIT=GTK
I have Nvidia driver nvidia-driver-390 (also tried switching to xserver driver to no avail).
Grateful for any help.

- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:
