I need to kill my display manager under Mint LXDE so I can install an application - I know it uses fluxbox for a Window manager but what display manager does it use/how can I stop it? I know it doesn't use GDM/KDM

it uses Slim

same... it also uses Slim.
Although... the Mint 9 versions od LXDE and Fluxbox will use LXDM and not Slim.
