3G and downloading Mint... It's a shame they don't sell Mint discs at more computer shops.

Excellent news! Downloading it as I speak. From this German link, which is pretty fast, at least for European users:
http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/linux/debian/mint/testing/

When will the final version be released, by the way?

If you run and keep the release candidate updated, you will already have the final release.

I'll try and give it a test drive this weekend.
Hopefully not too many ubuntu bugs in it.

Just one question..?
Which Kernel version does it come with?

Thanks

It comes with kernel 2.6.38-8. So far I haven't encountered any bugs, at least as far as what I usually do with the OS. As a matter of fact, video is more stable for me than with Mint 11 Main.

That kernel has a nasty bug with my Eee 1001P wireless, it gives a kernel panic every time it connects to wireless. Kernel 2.6.39.1 works great.

You can just install Mint 11 LXDE rc and then upgrade to 2.6.39.

Here's the tutorial on kernel upgrading: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=40185
The 2.6.39 kernel itself: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/ma ... 1-oneiric/

Tried Mint 11 LXDE on Virtualbox with several different VM RAM sizes.

First, using only the installer:
512MB - Runs and installs just fine.
384MB - Runs and installs just fine.
320MB - The installer crashed.
256MB - On first attempt it booted to a console, on second attempt it booted fine but the installer crashed.

Second, using Gparted first to create a SWAP and to activate that partition then running the installer:
320MB - Runs and installs just fine.
256MB - Worked but had some errors and had to reboot once and restart the installer.
192MB - Doesn't boot without a SWAP partition.

Third, using a pre-installed SWAP partition:
256MB - Runs and installs just fine.
192MB - Runs and installs.
160MB - Boots but the installer exists with error.
128MB - Boots but the installer exists with error.
96MB - Fails to boot.

So, 384MB is the minimum to install without a need for a SWAP partition. If you now how to use Gparted you can use the Mint 11 LXDE disc to create a SWAP, use the swapon option to activate the SWAP partition and only then start the installer, this way you need about 256MB of RAM to install. If you already have a SWAP partition you can install Mint 11 LXDE with as little as 192MB of RAM. If you have a graphics card with shared RAM you need to add that RAM amount to this values.

The "only-ubiquity" option doesn't work with Mint 11 LXDE (but it works on Mint 11). To install Mint 11 LXDE in a similar way boot the CD, logout, login with "mint" as user and no password (just press enter) with the Openbox session option, open the terminal, go to the desktop directory, use "cat" to see the ubiquity installer, run the command that is written after "Exec=", that's "sudo ubiquity --desktop %k --no-migration-assistant gtk_ui &" (use the mouse to copy and paste and add the " &"), close the terminal and follow the installer. Using this way the installer fails with 128MB of RAM but works with 160MB of RAM, on Mint 10 LXDE it work with 128MB but was very slow and sometimes it crash during install.
