Linux Mint 11 LXDE RC: some bug reports

Post by Pjotr »

Linux Mint 11 LXDE looks stonkingly good and very fine! In the RC I encountered only a few bugs, namely:

1. After the installation I got a prompt to reboot. I agreed to that, and the CD was ejected. But the system hung and could only be rebooted by a hard reboot (power button pressed for 5 secs). Not even Ctrl-Alt-Delete worked.

2. Updates were blocked because /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-repository.list couldn't be parsed, and could only be activated after this command:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/local-repository.list
3. Not all localized language files were retrieved automatically, I still had to run gnome-language-selector to get the missing language files.

4. Dutch localization files weren't up to date: I spend a lot of time recently to improve and expand the Dutch translations upstream at LXDE, but apparently they weren't used yet.... Was I too late with my translations?
The devs would do me a huge favour if they would apply the most recent upstream Dutch language files:

I'm working on your Dutch translations for a later update that should come out before the stable release. I generally try to make sure the core components are in place and working as best as possible for the RC and then add the extra details as necessary through updates.

Great job. I still have not run into any bugs in my day-to-day use of Mint 11 LXDE

Groovy. Glad it's working out well so far. In all of my preliminary testing the system was pretty rock solid and I'm glad to hear that some people are having similar success. I do specifically buy my computers with maximum Linux compatibility in mind though, so very often it's difficult for me to replicate bugs that the community finds regarding things such as hardware issues and whatnot.

Great to hear! Thanks for this reply, and also for your work. Linux Mint LXDE is by far my favourite LXDE distro. Slick, polished, rock solid. :)

I'm testing the RC now on 3 machines... 2 1/2 failures.
(I did an MD5 comparison after downloading and checked disk integrity)

1) AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz, 1GB ram, Nvidea Geforce FX5700 (agp)
(this is the main target machine, it runs Mint 10 LXDE just fine)

machine boots to command line.
'startx' fails.
some messages...
failed no load module "nvidea" (module does not exist,0)
failed no load module "nv" (module does not exist,0)

2) Intel P4 2GHz, 768MB ram, Nvidea GeForce MX420 (agp)
same errors as above.

3) Intel i5 3.3Ghz, 4GB ram, on-chip video
if loading from warm boot, i get the same errors as above,
however if I do a cold boot, X starts.
so 1/2 a success.

Comments....
While booting (all machines) most of time there is only a blank
screen. Made me think it was hungup. It needs something there.
Under Menu,Preference,Desktop Settings... a switch for Fortunes only.
(why this is located here I don't understand)
However, right clicking the desktop lets you made changes.
The is no 'Monitor Setting' tool that I can see. However, the RC did like my wide screen monitor
just fine and looks very good.
There is no tool for setting the time or date to be found.
Startup manager does nothing. (maybe do to running off of CD)

Conclusion...
Software is not liking my old hardware :(

I just tried it on a 4th machine.
Compaq Presario V5000 Laptop with Intel Mobile Integrated Graphics Controller.

Same problem as with first 2 machines.
X fails to start.
BTW, compatibility mode makes no difference.

It quite disappointing, as LXDE is targeted for older low spec/hardware machines. :(

Failed to load module means that something has gone wrong while burning or downloading.

Did you check the md5sum of the ISO file?
And does the disc integrity check return something?

Probably you just have to re-download (if the md5sum does not match) or if the md5sum is OK, burn a new disc at the lowest possible speed.

I did check the md5sum and got a match.
Also I checked the disk integrity... all good.
Disk was burned at 16x. Slowest available.
I download from:
http://ftp.heanet.ie/pub/linuxmint.com/testing/
iso date 16-Jun-2011 02:21
But I'll start from scratch with a fresh download as you suggest.
It does seem to boot "seemingly slow"

Thanks for the reply.

Probably another burning program (I can suggest ImgBurn for Windows users and K3B for Linux) is able to burn at a slower speed than 16x. I have used 4x and it was just fine.

I've often experienced disk burning errors when going faster than 8x. I strongly recommend using a USB in situations where it's possible to do so.

OK guys I tried it again.
Fresh download from a different mirror.
MD5sum is good.
Disk burned with IfraRecorder on XP at 4x.
(I used this with not problems for ISO's prior to using using Brasero on Mint.)
Disk Integrity is good... no errors.

I tried it on 2 machines, machine 1, (the AMD) and the laptop.
(other machines in use by family)

On AMD machine same problem... boots to command line.
But this time I was more observant to errors.
Prior to command promp I get this error:

sis630_smbus 0000:00:02.0: SIS630 comp. bus not detected, module not inserted

On the laptop the only gripe prior to the command prompt is about wireless driver.
(easily fixable).
But still no DE.

xstart - does not work
xinit - does not work

I could try burning slower at 1x but that could take ages and
I'm already old and grey

USB booting is not support on those motherboards.

I guess I'm stuck at Mint 10 LXDE for now, which works very well BTW! - Thanx Kendall
(Mint 8 LXDE was faster though)

Just wanted to try the latest.
I'll still be looking for a solution.

Thanks again guys!

Well I believe I found the root of the problem.

It's a recent update to Xorg and incompatibility with legacy drivers.
Nvidia has release updates but they're probably not packages in the
latest release of of this distro which is causing me problems
and some ubuntu users as well.

some info I found:
http://blog.fejes.ca/?p=379
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.ph ... ic=91867.0

My solution.... I'll pass on this release.

Thanks for your patience and input.

Also I'd like to apologize if I've hijacked this thread, but
I felt like it was an open bug report thread.

oh, okay--I guess it is a pass for me as well. I have nvidia card, so Mint LXDE 11rc, falls back to command line, and startx does not work at all. tried in compatibility mode as well, but no joy.

Will see how the Gold Master version adapts to the nvidia compatibility problem.

smiley_lauf: Please tell which card you're using (inxi -G in command-line) and if Mint 11 Gnome is able to boot.

@AlbertP: Apologies--I was out of town to reply in time.
Hardware: Dell Vostro 3700 with Nvidia Gforce 330m

Code: Select all

$ inxi -G
Graphics: Card nVidia GT216 [GeForce GT 330M] X.Org 1.10.1 Res: 1600x900@50.0hz
GLX Renderer GeForce GT 330M/PCI/SSE2 GLX Version 3.3.0 NVIDIA 270.41
Linux Mint 11 (GNOME) both the CD and DVD loads perfectly on this laptop; (it uses the nouveou drivers as default, but jocky-gtk picks up the additional drivers required.

Great thanks for the reply,

You're using version 270 of the nvidia driver - that has quite some bugs and doesn't work OK for many people.

Please uninstall the driver from the command-line: apt purge nvidia-current
Then reboot: sudo reboot

Now Nouveau 2D will be active again. You can also choose to install Nouveau 3D: it's the experimental driver in jockey-gtk, and it's libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental in the repository. If you don't need advanced 3D for high-end games, I can recommend using that driver instead of the official one.

Thanks-- I should have mentioned I am using Mint 11 GNOME to post that output. The problem I am having is loading Live CD of LXDE 11rc on this machine--it goes straight to a black screen then a terminal prompt. Much like what the previous poster mentioned.

Anyway, it is good to know that the nouveou 3D experimental drivers do work--I DO NOT do any gaming at all, but do a lot of video's and Maps, so do you still think I should remove the prop nvidia and replace with experimental 3D drivers/

Video-related things usually run fine on the experimental driver; though the CPU load while running a video is higher. Anyway, you could just try it and if the performance is not enough, you can install the official one again.

For 64-bit users: Ubuntu have not included the necessary compatibility binaries to run 32-bit programs 3D accelerated.

I'm running the LXDE RC also, and in addition to the initial feedback and suggestions I posted under the RC release announcement elsewhere on the forum, I'm now experiencing the following:

Software manager won't open from the menu.
When I open update manager and do a refresh, I get the following error:
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/packages.linuxmint.com_dists_katya_import_i18n_Translation-en
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

I should add that I downloaded the ISO, checked the MD5, used Unetbootin to create a bootable USB thumbdrive with the RC on it (which I'm now using to type this) - The desktop, internet and wireless seem to be AOK.

So, any suggestions?
