Heavy development has started on a new Fluxbox edition.

Just wanted to let everyone know that heavy development has begun on the Debian based Fluxbox edition. There will be some changes in this one compared to the last Ubuntu based one, notably that mint-fm2 is being deprecated in favor of a new menu generation system I'm writing in Python, and that I'll be pulling in the most current version of Fluxbox from Sid rather than have to deal with the oft-error-prone 1.1.1 that's in the testing repo.

I'm going to keep a lot of the details to myself as I don't want to spoil some of the surprises, but know that I'm working diligently on it. :)

Hmmmm ... Mint is coming out with a debian based fluxbox release ? Sounds interesting, went through a fluxbox stage and liked it. Might even be interesting enough to come back to using LM. Something to keep an eye on and plan on trying out. No buntu ... fluxbox and one of the talented LM devs involved ? Sounds really nice ...

I have been using Mint-9 Fluxbox and playing with antiX-base edition (Debian-based with Fluxbox)

I have found Mint-9 Fluxbox to be quite stable, and the Fluxbox Window Manager easier to use and more configurable than Openbox.
I do believe that Fluxbox, has replaced Xfce, as my desktop of choice.

I also, prefer using a Debian-based distro ... and love the concept of a 'rolling release'
I use have tried both LMDE and LMDX

I am looking forward to having and using a LinuxMint-Debian-Fluxbox edition. 8)

You're a busy man Kendall. I've been using the new LXDE regularly, and I'm sure the new Debian-based Fluxbox will be a 10/10 also.

If you want a distro for older computers, you could probably base Fluxbox on Antix instead of directly on Debian Testing... Antix is already a 'Debian done right' distro, that doesn't need as much terminal work as a regular Debian, to get a working desktop.

Unfortunately, antiX-distro is not directly based on Debian but instead is a Mepis offshoot.

antiX uses the Mepis kernel ... antiX does use, both the Debian and Mepis repositories.

Not saying that antiX and/or Mepis are bad, cause they are both good.
I use antiX (fluxbox) on my old laptop, as antiX is the best distro that I have found for older hardware.

The antiX config files/scripts are different than what Kendall has given us with Mint-9 Fluxbox CE.

I assume, that Kendall will continue with what he has already built with Fluxbox, and will do his best to improve on it.

Should be nice. I recently added Fluxbox to Mepis 11, looks very good.

There's great info out there for folks who might want to install Fluxbox and play around with it before the Fluxbox edition comes out. Just a few examples:

I've posted the preliminary menu package in the super-secret-and-cautiously-hidden developers forum for testing and scrutinizing. From here I'll need to rewrite the "quit" application to be independent of pygtk and I probably need to rewrite the daemon as well to save on RAM usage (should be super easy). Once we come to a reasonably well finalized package for the menu, I'll start working on the .iso. I'm trying not to hurry anything as I want this to be as solid as possible.

I've installed most mint editions going back to 8, and i keep coming back to isadora for some reason, whether its lxde fluxbox or straight up 9, I just like the way it works on my systems, though I would like to see a new fluxbox, having issues with 11 lxde.

Kendall,
I am all in favor of you taking your time to get it right.
My impatient posts about progress were more about the appearance that nothing was happening at all, not that I did not have it right now.

I'm curious about this...
What's wrong about using pygtk ?

I'm also totally looking forward to this. It's going to be the first non-Ubuntu-based distro I'm going to install . . . but the third Kendall-based distro, since I've got Mint LXDE on my desktop and Peppermint Two on my netbook! Thanks for all your hard work. Don't release it till it's done!
