its now 4 hours i'm searching to find a solution
tried adjusting etc/network/interfaces setting to dhcp (like the other computers)
plugged the cable in my other computer and instantly i was getting an ip for it .
so the problem starts from the nic .
when the cable is in the mint pc the router/switch dont recognize it .
dont now what to do !!! please help .

Did it work before on this installation, or have you freshly installed Linux Mint 11 and has your Ethernet connection never worked on it?

Also, are you aware that Linux Mint 11 has been obsoleted and reached end-of-life in October 2012? http://www.linuxmint.com/oldreleases.php. You'd be recommend to install Linux Mint 13, the current long term support release (support till April 2017), or Linux Mint 14, the latest release with the newest software (support till April 2014).

i installed 11 the moment it came out , never had problems till this moment .
i would rather find a solution and learn from it than install a newer version ...

What does the following command say?

Skip what snison asks, I think. That is for Wi-Fi devices, while you are trying to fix Ethernet device

i did nm-tool and the result is :

State disconnected !
state unavailable
carrier off

hardware problem perhaps ?
lights NIC are on

i now have
nm-tool
connected !!!!!!! thats one thing

so i get an IP address etc !!

the icon next to the clock says that the internet is connected

but i cant use firefox , always trying to connect till time is out .
cant update mint , same problem .

also in the network manager the loopback is always up , never eth0 .

the Mac address is FF:FF:FF:FF:FF:FF
thats the broadcast address by what i learned .
thats not right but how to change this ?
