ethernet not working <solved>

Post by kde2mint »

Linux mint1 3.13.0-24-generic #47-Ubuntu SMP Fri May 2 23:31:42 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
Mint 17 xfce
EeeBox PC B202 - Intel Atom N270 1.6Ghz
1Gb Ram
160Gb HDD (Hitachi HTS54321)
All known updates applied.

This is dual boot PC with winXP HP SP3 (32bit) and Mint 17.

QUESTION: How do I get my ethernet connection to work?

PROBLEM: Ethernet works on winXP, but I can't get the ethernet connection to work on the Mint side.
Network Manager icon:
Ethernet Network - grayed out
device not managed - grayed out

Tried this:
1. Ethernet problem exists using Installation CD in trial mode. Only Wireless works.

2. After installation to HDD. I rebooted and selected "Linux recovery mode". Selected "Enable Network" which produced this error
ModemManager [772] (v1.0.0)
/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00.0c.1/0000:02:00:0 not supported by plugin

3. Rebooted and logged into Mint. Used Network-Manager Icon in taskbar
a. Ethernet Connection 1 exists. (despite the fact that Network-Manager has ethernet network and device not managed grayed out)
b. I modified "Ethernet Connection 1". Changed it to static IP using "IPv4 Tab"
the result is...
$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr XXXXXXXXXXXX (I've deleted actual id for post)
inet addr:10.10.0.90 Bcast:10.10.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000

lo and wlan0 are OK.

Re: ethernet not working

Today I've made the following changes in an effort to remove the "Interrupt: 44" error code.

Restart PC and enter BIOS.
Change Wake Up LAN from disable to Enable.
Reboot.
Ethernet still not working. Interrupt 44 still exists.

Restart PC and enter BIOS
Change ACPI 2.0 from disable to Enable
Reboot.
Ethernet still not working. Interrupt 44 still exists.

Select: Network Icon| Edit| Ethernet Connection 1| Edit| Tab:IPv4 Settings|
Changed Method from Manual to Automatic (DHCP)
Save & Exit

Enter terminal
sudo dpkg-reconfigure resolvconf
Select YES
Reading Warning & select OK
Reboot
Ethernet still not working. Interrupt 44 still exists.

Restart & enter BIOS.
Return BIOS settings to original state ...
Wake Up LAN OFF
ACPI 2.0 OFF
Reboot

NO JOY. Problem still exists. Ethernet still not working.

Code: Select all

sudo ifconfig -a
run that in a terminal, post the result(s) back here

Code: Select all

inxi -n
what does that give?.

- Are the lights blinking on the switch and on the back of the PC (where the CAT5+ cable connects)?

Thank you for showing me a new command. I haven't seen this one before. This command (inxi -n) is more concise than those of lshw and lspci. Very nice. I would post this output, but I've made changes to the PC which have now altered the PC's state and therefore made the output useless for diagnostic purposes. I will be posting the solution soon.

As for the ifconfig output that was reported in my original post.

IT WORKS!

# ethtool -s eth0 speed 1000 duplex full
now eth0 stops working! Ethernet connection is broken.

# ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full
now eth0 is working!

Apparently for some reason the Gigabit connection does not work on my PC. And I confirmed that it does not work on the windows side either. So my ethernet card must have a problem. However I can note that on the windows side, winXP boots up with ethernet connection set to 100Mbs full duplex and it works without any manual changes. But Mint 17 does not boot up with a working ethernet connection. In fact Mint 17 can NOT use my ethernet connection unless I manually set the connection speed to 100Mbs (requires the installation and use of "ethtool").

BTW, I have a Gigabit router and the EeeBox B202 has a Gigabit Ethernet Card. I use a 50 foot CAT 5e cable to the router and with other PCs I am able to use Gigabit speed. However, the EeeBox is not able to negotiate Gigabit speed with either the Mint 17 installation nor on the windows side. Therefore, this must be a problem with my ethernet card. But again, Mint 17 should be able to attempt an ethernet connection at 100Mbs when the Gigabit connection fails.

SOLUTION: Below is a work-around solution for my PC.

The command cited above is a tempory fix and is needed with each reboot. To automate this ....
Open file: sudo nano /etc/rc.local
Edit file (insert the following command above the line "exit 0" within the file): ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full
exit & save
reboot
Now Ethernet works every time you turn on your EeeBox PC B202.

Here is a summary of the diagnostic commands that I used to help me find the clues I needed to solve my own problem.
ifconfig
ifup eth0
ifdown eth0
ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth0 up
ping 10.10.0.1
ps aux|grep net
lspci
lsusb
lsmod
lshw -C network
inxi -n (this command supercedes the use of lshw and lspci b/c it consolidates the information from these two commands)
fwts aspm

/sbin/modinfo jme(module name of the network driver used)
dmesg | grep jme (module name)
dmesg | grep eth (ethernet)
# cat /var/log/syslog|grep -e eth0 |tail -n30
# cat /var/log/syslog|grep -e jme(driver name) |tail -n30

Packages installed:
$ sudo su
# apt-get install fwts
# apt-get install ethtool

Commands used with new pkgs:
# fwts aspm
# ethtool -s eth0 speed 100 duplex full

I just had the same problem and was able to fix it following your instructions. Thanks so much for documenting this issue so well.

Hello!

Just a question from France :-):

I've got an eeeBox B202 (the same as yours) to and like to know how yours work with Mint 17 xfce.

I know it worked very fine with Mint 13 KDE, but since I've installed Mint 17 KDE, it's very very slow.

I installed Mint 17 KDE because I wanted tu use Netflix with it (and it really works with the last Chromium release). Did you try Netflix with Mint 17 xfce?

Thanks a lot for the answer :D
