Im trying to follow this tutorial to set up ftp via ethernet to my ps3. I thought i did the linux equivalent but i cant seem to connect with ethernet.

I just did a quick review, here are some other links for you to look at. Why not just use a USB flash drive, or USB external hard drive to copy the games?
You should be able to use any FTP client for this as long as you know the PS3 IP address and it allows it FTP transfers, but you also have to make sure your Linux firewall has the open "ports" (firewall rule), or disable the Linux firewall temporarily.

I use my file manager in MATE to contact FTP sites with no problem. Have you tried using your file manager to FTP?
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....
