no wifi connection linux mint 18

Post by beacon » Wed Aug 10, 2016 7:14 am

Obviously this is not really a new topic, but a search of the forum hasn't helped me. I installed Mint 18 alongside 17.3. There is no problem with the internet connection on the latter, but I can't make a start on 18. I am using a Netgear N300 router and am using an ethernet connection at the moment. When I go to network settings, only 'wired' is shown. Network connections let me add a wireless connection, but it does nothing. I notice that I have only three choices (hotspot, client and adhoc), whereas on Mint 17.3 I set up under 'infrastructure'. Also when I go to security, I am not given the choice of a WPA & WPA2 password, but only 2 choices of keys. I have attempted several suggestions, such as those in 'things to do after installing Linux Mint 18', but they get me nowhere. Have I overlooked something simple? I'd appreciate any help and hope I have provided sufficient information.

a. Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

b. Do the same with the following commands:

Code: Select all

rfkill list all
and:

Code: Select all

iwconfig

What wireless network card should be available? It doesn't show up in the inxi output.

Furthermore, is it a USB dongle or a PCI card?

I entered the same commands you suggested for Linux Mint 18 on Linux Mint 17.3, where I am able to use wi fi.
I wonder if that helps.

Many thanks,

There has been no response to my latest post, and now I'd like to add yet another comment. I have tried everything I can find on the forum and the web generally, and nothing helps. I simply cannot get a wi fi connection. Having torn out my hair during the past week I decided to try another install of Mint 18. I first checked the integrity of the disk and then tried it without installing. I went to network, and it immediately recognised my wi fi, and I connected. That sounded great, so I installed, only to find that I am back to square one. When I go to network there is no choice and only the wired connection shows up.

Please can anyone think what goes wrong between using the live disk and the installation?

It could be the network manager bug post results for

Now that is strange as your iwconfig results from 3 days ago showed

Code: Select all

wlx801f02b35c9d unassociated Nickname:"rtl_wifi"
Mode:Auto Access Point: Not-Associated Sensitivity:0/0
Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0
The wireless interface was called wlx801f02b35c9d but the dmesg shows no sign of it and just a couple mentions of wlan0

Reboot and since you have dual boot the grub menu should appear, scroll to advanced options for Linux Mint 18, click enter, then choose an option with "upstart" and click enter to boot and we will see if it functions correctly there

Sorry to say there was a problem with the latest attempt. I got to upstart, but when I clicked on it, the mint logo appeared but nothing else The screen seemed frozen.

Lets try a module parameter to set the name as it is in iwconfig

Code: Select all

echo "options r8712u ifname=wlx801f02b35c9d" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/r8712u.conf
Reboot

Lets delete that file

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/r8712u.conf
Then we will disable the renaming of the wireless interface

Code: Select all

sudo -H xed /etc/default/grub
Then find the line that should start with

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
My line was actually

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
We are going to add a bit to that so it will be

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash net.ifnames=0"
The net.ifnames=0 will tell the system not to rename
Then we save and exit the editor and update the grub file with

Code: Select all

sudo update-grub
Reboot

I started to follow your instructions and the first two commands led to what follows:

~ $ sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/r8712u.conf
[sudo] password for :
~ $ sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/r8712u.conf
rm: cannot remove ‘/etc/modprobe.d/r8712u.conf’: No such file or directory
~ $ sudo -H xed /etc/default/grub
sudo: xed: command not found

With these negative results I assume that it is useless to continue. Or am I wrong?
