SOLVED - Learning to share...

Post by SayCheeze »

I'm running Linux 17.2 Mint, and have a test MS server running 2003 server. Both belong to the same workgroup.

I've installed samba, or I think I have, plus I installed the GUI interface to allow me to share folders on the Linux PC.

As of now, I can't see either machine from either side, or at least their shares. I've shared a folder on each machine, but still no go.

This isn't mission critical. I'm just trying to hash it out in my head.

Does the Linux Box have to be running a server version of Mint?

What other parts should I be looking at?

Linux machine 10.0.0.1
MS machine 10.0.0.3

TIA

No. That's the only part of your question that I know the answer to, though.

Hi "SayCheeze",

It would help to know more about your system setup. If you run "inxi -Fxzd" from the console terminal prompt, highlight the results, copy and paste them back here, that should provide enough information.

Out of curiosity, why have you setup and are running a MS Server, for what purpose(s)?

Also, you might consider upgrading to Linux Mint 17.3 using the Mint Update Manager.

Thanks for the links ;)

I just dable with Linux. I have to run Win7 at the shop, and have a dual boot system. I have an older Dell Server, that has 2003 on it, and am thinking of using it for a Backup Server. I already have a NAS, but I thought why not use the box anyway. So while I have it, I thought I would try to learn how to share folders across OS's... There is really nothing on the server per se' short of the OS.

Here's my setup

You have to be careful which instructions you read, because Samba usage has changed from Mint 17.2 to the current Mint 18.1
You can use this guide. HowTo: Samba Browsing Problems Checklist - by altair4

And more tips

I also know I've screwed something up, because the software mgr, or synaptic mgr, takes 20 minutes to load up...

Is there a way I can just revert back the OS to Friday of last week, before I started to hack away at it with the file sharing stuff ?

:)

Guess what? I just saw folders from the 2003 MS server from my Linux side of things on my box. Now if I can only clear up these system hangs like on Synaptic and such.

That would be best in a new thread, I think.
Include the results of

Code: Select all

inxi -r
and

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

When I try to run apt-get update, I get these at the end.

I'm running that update again, and now it will take 1/2 hour to run, while trying to read pkgs.. so I'm terminating it..

The lock error message could be due to having Software Sources or Synaptic open at the same time you are running the command sudo apt-get update.

Apart from that, you have 3 PPA's listed:
gezakovacs-ppa
osmoma-audio-recorder
wine-wine-builds
One of those could be causing the delay. I suggest opening the Software Sources program > click on PPA's, and disable those 3 PPA's temporarily. Then close the Software Sources program and in a terminal, run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
to see if you get better performance.

The highlighted line from your post is a legitimate Samba error but one which makes no sense since Samba isn't involved in any way with the "update" command you are trying to run.

I keep notes on things like this and there is one situation which I noted where this could happen and it's with the use of sudo. You would get that error message any time you invoked sudo to do anything. The problem was with a messed up package which you could remove since it's not required:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove libpam-smbpass
I don't know if it will resolve all the issues you have listed but it's something you might want to check.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.

Appreciate it. I'll run that command this afternoon when I get there. Fortunately Mint isn't my primary OS on this machine.

Hi "SayCheeze",

You are welcome for the links, and I have a new one below.

I have been following your post and the good replies to it. Here are my new thoughts on this as well.

1.) I just noticed from the results of you running the "inxi -Fxzd" console terminal command, that you, or someone else, installed a 32-bit version of Linux Mint when your computer is a really nice 64-bit computer (Quad core Intel Core i7 CPU 920)? I would backup (or copy) anything you want to save on the current system to an external drive, and install a 64-bit version of Linux Mint over the current one (takes about 16 minutes or less), then copy back the files. I would highly recommend that you install a Linux Mint version 17.3 or version 18.1 (64-bit).

2.) Whenever I have a problem running an update or installing something in Linux Mint, like the messages you recently posted, I will restart my computer and run the commands below from a console terminal prompt which will normally correct those issues. The locking messages are usually due to someone trying to install or update something from a console terminal command while the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) is running or the Mint Update Manager is running, or visa-versa. You cannot have more than one installation or update process running at the same time.

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get install -f

3.) Another good article Link for Samba that I got in my email yesterday.

Create a Shared Directory on Samba AD DC and Map to Windows/Linux Clients – Part 7
* Note that this is part 7 (meaning there are links to other related articles)
http://www.tecmint.com/create-shared-di ... s+Guide%29

4.) You can use Linux Mint as a professional photographer (or any other business or profession) for personal or for business. There are numerous posts in this forum regarding that, if you search for them. If you ask, we can provide some for you.

Best regards,
Phil

Re: Learning to share...

Greetings all. We'll I think she's on the mend.

I ran this command... "sudo apt-get remove libpam-smbpass" and she ran through it, without a hiccup. I rebooted, and things seem more stable now. Of course I can't see the WIN2003 Server, but that's not a problem, since I was just trying to learn Samba, and sharing. No real need to connect to it.

I'll consider that upgrading to a newer flavor of Mint as well. I installed this version over a year ago, and was just winging it. ;) I know enough now to be dangerous as you can see...

There isn't anything on the Mint side of things that I need on this dual boot. All my real data is on a different physical drive on, and on a NAS and off site as well on a server.

Appreciate the help guys... I'm not going to mark this solved JUST yet, but will after I'm sure we're rolling like it should.
