Cannot get Ethernet to work

Post by ibkozi » Wed Mar 15, 2017 8:21 am

Hello. I have been trying to learn Linux and decided to start with Mint 18(keep in mind, I am a noob). I created a Live USB with Mint and tried it(i never tried the networking, just wanted to get a look at it). It looked great, so I put a HDD in so I can dual boot Windows 10. The install went well. However, when I tried to run updated I realized I had no access to the internet even though it shows connected. I checked and saw that I get a IPV6 address, but no IPV4. I cannot ping or access my router. I ran a few commands to help with any troubleshooting you might provide. I have reset the connection, I tried it with booting to the live USB, still no internet, but shows connected. I have tried reserving the IP in the router and setting IPV4 manually, still didn't work. I tried Just IPV4, and just IPV6, and it didn't help. I have a Raspberry Pi 3 running Raspian, I can successfully connect with both wired and wireless with it. Any helps is appreciated.

Might seem simple stupid. But when mine showed connected in inxi like yours.

It turned out to be a hardware problem. I changed out my eth hard line cable. Problem solved for me.
It could have been a bad port also <maybe router or motherboard>. Lucky for me it was not.

I read your ipv remarks. I have not had problems like you are listing as far as e1000 driver and firmware is concerned.

Code: Select all

Card: Intel Ethernet Connection I217-V
           driver: e1000e v: 3.2.6-k port: f040 bus-ID: 00:19.0
IF: eno1 state: up speed: 1000 Mbps duplex:
So I guess did you md5sum check your iso before doing a install?

No I didn't. I am starting to think I should download a new copy and try again with a fresh ISO. I know the hardware works as I am dual booting with Windows 10 and it works fine on the network. The Linux driver I found for the card is the same one installed. Thanks for looking at it.

I downloaded a fresh copy of Mint Cinnamon. I verified the mD5sums. I put it on a USB stick and booted to it. It gets an IPV6 address, no IPV4 address, shows connected, but cannot get to the router or the internet. GRRRR. I am going to try live Ubunto and see if that makes any difference.

I installed a USB wireless adapter. The wireless works great. I can now update Mint.

Ok, I finally figured out the source of the problem. The problem is with the Intel 1217-v ethernet adapter and WOL settings. Make sure it is off in BIOS, but ALSO they must be turned off on the NIC in Windows Device Manager. Both must be done. It all works good now.
